Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists in Whitby, ON
You may be seeking therapy because you’re carrying grief that feels hard to share — the pain of infertility, pregnancy loss, or infant loss that others may not fully understand. Perhaps trauma still feels close, your body no longer feels like a safe place, or relationships feel heavier than they once did. I work with adults navigating reproductive trauma and loss, as well as impacts of sexual abuse and attachment wounds. Many clients struggle with shame, overwhelm, difficulty trusting, or feeling disconnected from themselves. Together we work toward relief, clarity, and rebuilding a sense of safety within yourself and relationships.

You are carrying the weight of the past in your present, perhaps feeling stuck in cycles of hypervigilance, emotional exhaustion, or "numbing out." You have survived difficult life events—whether a single incident or years of complex stress—and are ready to reclaim your narrative. You might struggle with intrusive thoughts, boundary issues, or a fractured sense of self. Whether you are navigating PTSD or the subtle ripples of "small-t" trauma, you are looking for more than just a listener; you are looking for a path toward lasting restoration and a life that is no longer defined by what happened to you.

I also integrate Emotion-Focused and Mindfulness strategies.
It could feel like no matter how much you do, it’s never quite enough. You push yourself to meet your standards, and when you fall short – even just a little – it feels overwhelming. Your mind might be racing, overanalyzing every detail, second-guessing decisions, or replaying mistakes. Maybe you feel like you have to keep everything under control, and when things don’t go as planned, anxiety takes over. Sometimes, the pressure becomes so much that you shut down, feeling stuck or hopeless. You work so hard, but instead of feeling proud, you feel exhausted, angry, or like you’re failing. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

I draw on somatic work, an attachment lens, EFT, mindfulness, and IFS/parts.
You’re used to holding a lot together on the outside while quietly feeling anxious, overwhelmed, burnt out, disconnected, or constantly “on” underneath. Maybe you’re carrying critical calls home after shifts, struggling to shut your brain off at night, navigating fertility grief or major life changes, or feeling exhausted by the pressure to keep functioning while everyone assumes you’re “fine.” You want therapy to feel human: a space to exhale, feel understood, calm your nervous system, make sense of what’s happened, and reconnect with yourself again.

Lately, have you been feeling less and less like the person you once were? You feel disconnected from the life that used to bring you joy and satisfaction. Perhaps you’ve experienced a dramatic life event or transition that has brought about this change? You’ve moved, ended school, started a new job, or begun a new relationship. Maybe it is more related to the loss of something or someone in your life. Possibly the change has been more subtle and unexplainable, and you just don’t feel like yourself anymore. I can help. I understand that life can throw us curveballs that we are rarely ready for.

It takes courage to reach out for support, and if you’ve found yourself here you are already taking a meaningful first step. I do not believe that therapy is about "fixing" what is broken, but instead making space to understand your experience, your struggles, and your story with compassion and curiosity.

Big emotions and chronically feeling overwhelmed can be exhausting. Most of us will try what's already worked for us in the past, and when those things aren't getting us where we need to go, that's where therapy can step in. A focused practice of stepping back, looking at what's going on, and then stepping forward again to explore the pain points and the discomfort so folks can make change and live differently, is what I've been providing for people as a licenced counsellor for the past eighteen years. I do so in a way that joins the head and the heart, that's compassionate, non-judgemental, and often with a dose of humour.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
