LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapists in Whitby, ON
I am a Queer, integrative therapist and I work with teens, queer individuals, and other often-overlooked people who struggle with their identity and want a safe place to explore who they are, understand their emotions and patterns more deeply, and talk openly about the parts of life that can feel difficult, taboo, or lonely.
In our work together we focus on self-understanding, self-compassion, and creating meaningful change from the inside out. Sessions are honest and authentic with room for compassionate inquiry and reflection.

I’m Brianna, and I primarily work with children, teens, and young adults, mostly who are LGBTQ+, navigating anxiety, OCD, panic attacks, emetophobia, identity, self-harm, and big changes that feel overwhelming.
In our work, you’ll likely hear me talk about your different “parts,” the ones that feel stuck, scared, conflicted, or exhausted. We’ll gently explore the fears and anxieties underneath them (yes, I’m a therapist, and yes, your childhood and early relationships may come up) and how they're getting in the way of the life you want.

The difficult emotions you might be feeling, such as anxiety, sadness, resentment, guilt, or overwhelm to name a few, are guides that are here to tell you something about your experiences or your beliefs. When ignored, they get louder, when avoided, more painful. I will seek to understand your experience, and go at your pace, as you tell the stories of what is happening for you, and what has happened. When we face together, what is painful and confusing alone, new realizations and understanding can emerge.

Looking for the right therapist can be stressful, while also hopeful. My philosophy to clinical work comes from my belief that you are trying to do the best you can with the skills you have & also want support so you can do and feel different. This may come from a want to touch back into therapy after a break, seeking something new in your therapeutic work, or you are seeking help for the first time-tired of feeling stuck in patterns that are not serving you. I work collaboratively with clients in the understanding that we are all human, that we all struggle, & can develop new ways of supporting ourselves to thrive vs survive.

Providing a competent space for queer clients, avoiding having to use precious session time to catch me "up".
I take an integrative approach to therapy, meaning I draw from a variety of therapeutic styles to create a personalized experience that works for you. I favour experiential modalities like Internal Family Systems (IFS)/parts work, which helps us explore and understand the different parts of you that may have conflicting needs or desires (for example, one part may long for love while another fears commitment...). By working with these parts, we can reduce inner conflict and foster more balance and self-compassion. Alongside IFS, I incorporate practical and grounded tools from cognitive modalities (including ERP therapy for OCD).

I help people who feel trapped in patterns where they over give, second guess themselves, or stay too long in painful relationships. This isn’t a character flaw; it’s something you learned, and something you can unlearn. I help people who are looking for lasting change, but don't know where to start. Maybe you are navigating people-pleasing, grief, or dealing with a narcissistic relationship. You might carry shame around things no one talks about like sex, death, or feeling like you are too much. I work with adults who want something deeper: clarity, self-trust, and space to explore who they really are.

You're the person everyone relies on. Whether you're adjusting to motherhood, striving for success in your career, building a life in a new country, or navigating changes in your relationships, you hold yourself to high standards and often put your own needs last. On the outside, you seem to have it all together. Inside, you're overwhelmed, overthinking, juggling a never-ending to-do list, and carrying an invisible mental load. You struggle to set boundaries, ask for help, or rest without guilt. You care deeply - sometimes so much about others that little is left for yourself.

You may be seeking therapy because you’re carrying grief that feels hard to share — the pain of infertility, pregnancy loss, or infant loss that others may not fully understand. Perhaps trauma still feels close, your body no longer feels like a safe place, or relationships feel heavier than they once did. I work with adults navigating reproductive trauma and loss, as well as impacts of sexual abuse and attachment wounds. Many clients struggle with shame, overwhelm, difficulty trusting, or feeling disconnected from themselves. Together we work toward relief, clarity, and rebuilding a sense of safety within yourself and relationships.

LGBTQ+ Counsellors
Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?
Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialised training, either during their degree programme or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.
Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalisation in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.
How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?
Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.
Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?
While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialised training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
