My experience as a wife and mother, as well as my twenty year career in social work, allows me to support clients in such areas as parenting , postpartum depression, anxiety, relationship issues, PTSD, trauma, adoption, child welfare, life transitions, and compassion fatigue.
Have you reached a point in your life where you just can't seem to find that happy spark anymore? Do you feel unmotivated and not sure what to do about it? It's not unusual to feel like you are just existing day to day - whether at school, at work, with your partner, or even parenting your children. We all get stuck in a spot of feeling undervalued and overwhelmed and this is more common now than ever before.

I believe that the parent -child relationship is the foundation of children's mental wellness.
Through the activity of play I help children to make sense of difficult life experiences (e.g. divorce, death of a loved one) and navigate the big feelings (e.g. anxiety, anger, sadness) that are often at the root of challenging behaviour. I support children and their caregivers become more able to cope with how they are feeling, develop insight, emotional intelligence and confidence.

Motherhood is hard. It is messy. If you're struggling to find moments of joy, you're feeling alone and overwhelmed, you wonder if something is wrong with you and you long for your life before becoming a parent - you're in the right place. If you're feeling resentment building with your partner, the voices of anxiety, depression, sadness and rage have been loud and you don't know know how to manage them- you're not alone. If you're working to heal from a traumatic birth, you are struggling with the demands of parenting and paid work and you do you don't know who you are anymore- I'd be honoured to hold space for you.

Parenting can be hard. Social media, gaming, peer dynamics, school and mental health diagnoses impact children and teens which can lead to challenging behaviours that are difficult for parents to understand and respond to. At the same time, today's parents are dealing with their own life stressors (work, finances, relationships and mental health concerns) that can further challenge positive family functioning. Thriving Families Counselling provides support to parents and their children in achieving personal wellness goals and helps to foster positive change and understanding in the family as a whole.

Because children do well when parents are well, we'll work together to help you reconnect with your parenting instinct and reclaim the important role you hold in your home with energy and confidence.
Parenthood is hard! You know that showing up for your kids helps them grow up to be resilient, confident, and secure adults. But when your tank is empty and you are feeling exhausted, you aren't showing up in the way you want to. You live with guilt, self-doubt and anxiety leaving you feeling angry and lost. You find yourself yelling more than you'd like and resorting to old ways of reacting to your children's behaviour. You're tired and struggle to make it through the day. You want to do better. You long to feel energized, grounded and certain as you make daily parenting choices that will help your family feel more at ease.

Whether you suspect that you are impacted by childhood emotional neglect, or you are living with depression and anxiety, the pain of trauma, difficulties related to ADHD, or parenting challenges, I assure you that I am open and ready to support you.
My specific area of clinical practice is in childhood emotional neglect (CEN). The difficult thing about CEN is that its impacts upon people’s lives are often hard to identify. Many people grow up with their external needs (e.g. for food, shelter, clothing, etc.) met adequately or even met well, but in an environment where their emotional needs were ignored, unrecognized, under-recognized or discouraged. You may have grown up telling yourself that you had a fine, good or even great childhood, and this can make it incredibly difficult to pinpoint why you feel empty, alone, depressed, or separate from other people.

Is your child now a stranger? Your once sweet baby grew up a bit and is now distant, aggressive, private, and a stranger. You never thought you'd see the day they'd cuss at you. It feels like a constant cycle of arguments, groundings, and harsh conversations that aren't working. They're yelling at you, you're yelling at them, and parenting just hurts right now. Nobody told you it would get this hard. Maybe it has escalated to drugs, gangs, and violence. All you know is you're afraid, frustrated, and panicked. You want your child back.

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
