I will prioritize building a
relationship
with you in order to help you feel safe and validated while we do this work together.
What if you could live a life without such intense emotional pain? To the outside world, you seem to be functioning well. Maybe you put on a smile and go through the motions to get through everyday life, but your inner world tells a different story. Each day may feel like a struggle because low mood or memories from the past seem to be a dark cloud that follows you everywhere you go. With specialties in trauma and PTSD, depression, and addiction, I understand that behaviours are often a way of coping with intense pain. My goal is to help you feel like you can cope with life again.

Hi! I'm Gillian (she/her) and I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). I have studied mental health across the lifespan and have over 15 years of experience working in healthcare. I believe that at the heart of being human is the desire for connection with others and our world. But sometimes it can feel like we are stuck and disconnected. As a therapist, I set out to build strong connections with my clients, making them feel seen, heard and cared for. Together we set goals and make a treatment plan, taking into account each individual’s unique experiences, culture and beliefs.

Therefore it is vital that the therapeutic
relationship
feel safe and accepting.
Carl Jung stated, “I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.” We all encounter hardships; however, I believe we can choose what we make of those experiences. Every person has the capacity for healing, growth, and change, and I am honoured to be part of that process with you. I have experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families. Presenting issues I have worked with include depression, anxiety, trauma,
relationship
issues, emotion regulation, self-esteem, stress, burn out, and more.

I work with families, individuals,
couples
, and groups to provide support for
relationship
turbulence, grief, anxiety/depression, and life transitions, including immigration struggles. Clients may come to therapy feeling overwhelmed by stress, sadness, anger, fear, self doubt, substance use, shame, and a diminished sense of self or worth. I help them realize that adverse situations do not define them. As we work together, they gain the skills to overcome obstacles and to build positive, reciprocal relationships of value and mutual respect.

My specialties include anxiety, depression,
relationship
conflict and school and work stress.
Getting connected with a therapist can be difficult. I ask you to contact with basic information, your availability and a phone number. We discuss your needs, my qualifications and how we'll be working together. My approach to counselling is informal, but goal focused. Taking on only a few clients allows me to genuinely focus. Rates are per session and results may be noticeable within four to six sessions. Counselling is a safe place to be honest and share with a professional who has concern and the ability to walk you through the change needed for you to be healthier and happier. Connect if I can be that help.

Couples Counselling
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
