My specialties include anxiety , depression, relationship conflict and school and work stress.
Getting connected with a therapist can be complicated. I ask you to contact with basic information, your availability and a phone number. We discuss your needs, my qualifications and how we'll be working together. My approach to counselling is informal, but goal focused. Taking on only a few clients allows me to genuinely focus. Rates are per session and results may be noticeable within four to six sessions. Counselling is a safe place to be honest and share with a professional who has concern and the ability to walk you through the change needed for you to be healthier and happier. Connect if I can be that help.

Are you struggling with depression, anxiety , or going through a difficult life change? Are you having trouble managing your emotions? Or, is pain from the past or worries about the future making it hard to experience joy or peace now? I work to see the person behind the problem, to be present with you, and to empower you to make changes where needed or find a path to coping and acceptance when change isn’t available. Given the chance to tell your story and explore patterns in thoughts, behaviours, and relationships, you can more clearly see how to feel better and I can help you to do that.

IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITY - that there is a way to think differently; to feel differently; to live differently. Within each of us, we possess the tools we need to heal & be happy. But sometimes we make unhealthy choices in order to cope with emotional &/or physical pain. Despite our best intentions we can spiral downward, negatively impacting our relationships, careers, physical health & lifestyle. I believe that with support, change can happen. I am registered with a Master of Social Work & over 30yrs of clinical experience in the areas of trauma, addictions, anxiety , depression, grief/loss, parenting, life transitions & mindfulness.

‘Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.’ W. Dyer. Sometimes that’s easier said than done though, right? It may not be possible to avoid stress for the rest of our lives, but it is absolutely possible to have the strategies to work through it and the support to facilitate it. My work is centered on helping people figure out ‘life’ - managing relationships with others and self, dealing with big emotions, working through trauma, grief, anxiety , depression, all while honoring and caring for a person’s whole self.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
