As a child or a teenager , you may be finding that you are feeling misunderstood by many adults in your life, and that your problems are often deemed insignificant. Growing up in today’s world is difficult and stressful, whether it be due to peer and family relationships, school stress, future life planning, or the effects of social media, among many others. It seems like anxiety and depression are a part of everyday language in the media and your peer group, and it has left you wondering if this pain you're feeling is just an inevitable aspect of growing up.

Have you been feeling stuck and unable to change how you feel or act? Most likely you have been effected by experiences from your past. Consciously you may understand the value of changing a behaviour, but unless your deeper mind is transformed, change is not likely. Attempting to bring about enduring change without eliminating these "ghosts from the past" is like trying to repair the structure of a building by applying a coat of paint. Using a gentle, painless, and fun approach to therapy, I create immediate and lasting change through brain-changing conversations, teaching you how to stress-proof and play your brain for change.

Over the last 20 years, I have worked with individuals and families, of all ages, in a variety of different settings. This has ranged from counselling in a family physician's office to front-line child protection and now, I am returning to private psychotherapy practice. The people I work with have often felt uncomfortable or uncertain about seeking help. They tend to have a sense of how they would like life to be different, but are at times, unsure of how to move forward and start the process of change.

Making meaning of our lives can become difficult when problems arise that we least expected. What if we have never experienced these things and coping isn't going so well, what do we do? What if the old familiar things keep happening? Sometimes our usual ways of staying focused and present are interrupted, even if we have managed before. I have been part of many healing journeys and one thing is the same in all of us: we must move through the difficulties with support in order to get back to our present. I am here to help you do just that.

Real Talk Therapy comes from my real life experiences on the floors of hospitals, agencies and treatment centres. This background has helped to create a 20 year+ private practice that is grounded, direct and well informed. Although my Master's degree in Clinical Social Work (MSW) has been a great foundation, my interest has always been about the art and delivery of a great counselling experience. To that end I offer you a safe place to explore, express and experience your next steps. My ten years as a frontline therapist on the PTSD program at Homewood Health Centre in Guelph is a solid rescource of experience.

Within my practice, I specialize in working with children and adolescents and adults, specifically adults looking for parenting support/coaching and mothers entering into the world of parenting (prenatal, pregnancy, postpartum). My therapeutic approach is an eclectic one, one that is flexible to the needs of my client. It is very important to know that therapy is not a “one size fits all” approach and therefore I find flexibility in my approach to be imperative. I offer therapeutic approaches in the realm of talk, art, and play therapy. I have training in a variety of therapeutic approaches making my approach flexible to your needs.

Your life has most likely been through many transitions in the past few years. If you need support in figuring out who you are today, how to heal from the past, and navigate this ever-changing world, you are not alone. As your therapist, I can offer a fresh perspective, help you find new tools and supports, and increase your sense of awareness and autonomy in your life. You don't have to figure out everything on your own. You know you can't change the past, but you can learn new ways to respond to it, make meaning of it, and manage the effects it has on your everyday life.

People often make sense of their lives through stories. We tell stories about who we are, how we live, and how we fit in our relationships and our world. Sometimes the stories we tell about ourselves, leave us feeling angry, depressed, hopeless, incapable, unworthy or unlovable. Maybe somewhere along the line you've become 'an angry person,' or 'out of control.' Maybe your child lives with an 'Anxiety Gremlin' that feeds off their greatest worries and fears. Learning how and when these stories started, and how they influence our individual struggles, can be a big step in learning how to move forward.

Teen Counsellors
Adolescence can be a time of both disorientation and discovery. The transitional period can raise questions of independence and identity; as adolescents cultivate their sense of self, they may face difficult choices about academics, friendship, sexuality, gender identity, drugs, and alcohol.

Most teens have a relatively egocentric perspective on life; a state of mind that usually abates with age. They often focus on themselves and believe that everyone else—from a best friend to a distant crush—is focused on them too. They may grapple with insecurities and feelings of being judged. Relationships with family members often take a backseat to peer groups, romantic interests, and appearance, which teens perceive as increasingly important during this time.

The transition can naturally lead to anxiety about physical development, evolving relationships with others, and one's place in the larger world. Mild anxiety and other challenges are typical, but serious mental health conditions also emerge during adolescence. Finding a teen therapist in Wasaga Beach and addressing a disorder early on can help ensure the best possible outcome.
