As a Registered Psychotherapist my approach to psychotherapy is built on the foundation of the therapeutic relationship. My ability to connect with clients is evident in the rapport I build with them and through a collaborative treatment process. I believe that therapeutic success comes from a combination of work done with the therapist during session in addition to work at home. As well, I firmly believe that there’s no “one size fits all” technique when it comes to an individual’s mental health. I apply a variety of therapeutic techniques to best suit each individual client’s needs.

A first step in challenging our shame and struggle with self-acceptance can be to take the risk of allowing someone to witness our vulnerability. A counsellor can act as this witness, holding compassion in a safe and non-judgmental space. My counselling style is guided by the principle that we inherently have the inner resources to meet life’s challenges from a place of empowerment. I work from feminist, narrative, anti-oppression, and person-centered frameworks.

I chose to get into this work because I understand what it’s like to struggle with overwhelming thoughts and feelings and deal with conflict that feels unmanageable. When we don’t feel comfortable to express our emotions and don’t feel safe enough to express our desires, needs, limits, &/ or boundaries, it creates stress, anxiety, anger, and depression, which can lead to issues in our friendships, relationships, families and at work. I have a deep desire to support others who also long to leave behind their overwhelming thoughts and feelings for a life that is fulfilling, instead of just "manageable".

***ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS: IN-PERSON & PHONE/VIDEO*** We believe that there is good in every person, and hope in every situation. We have helped individuals, couples, and families heal, grow, and connect. As relational therapists, we appreciate the impact that our relationships have on our well-being. We do not see clients as having something wrong with their minds that necessarily needs to be fixed. Rather, we see our clients as unique individuals, each with their own stories and perspectives, embedded in important relationships and contexts that impact them. We see strengths and we see hope, even when it feels like there is none.

There is something wrong with me - is usually where people begin to seek therapy. I take that phrase and propose an alternate perspective. People are not problems to be fixed but beings to be known. Pain, grief, frustration, anger, sadness, anxiety, depression and many other issues that are brought to the therapy room are better addressed when better understood. I choose to take on an integrative and holistic approach to therapy which gives each person the freedom to explore the many different facets of who they are that contribute to the concerns they present.

Often when we experience difficulties in life we can feel stuck. We may spend our time and energy ruminating about the past or worrying about the future, leading us to miss the present moment. "The past is finished. Learn from it and let it go.The future is not here yet. Plan for it, but do not waste your time worrying about it.Worrying is worthless"(Brian L. Weiss).I'm passionate about my work and will work to help you tackle life's challenges that fit your lifestyle and goals for therapeutic change. By creating a safe, warm and welcoming environment as the foundation to help create change and help prevent later suffering/hardship

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
