Somatic Therapists in Toronto, ON

Combining mind and body-based therapies with attachment theory, IFS, EMDR and somatic techniques, I use an integrative approach to reach beyond our adult, logical self to the deepest layers of our being; the ones that hold the key to true transformation.
What's your "normal"? Has "just getting by" become a way of life? As we struggle with past and present stresses, living takes a back seat to surviving. We all have a survivor within us - a part that carries us through the bad times and holds us together when we feel like falling apart. It's a brilliant survival strategy. And an unhappy way to live. But what if it doesn’t have to be that way? What if there’s more to life than just surviving? What if there’s hope? From getting back to normal to redefining the boundaries of normal, there is a better way. A way to stop surviving and start thriving.

We draw from different modalities and incorporate both talk therapy and somatic (body-based) techniques into our interventions.
We are a team of dedicated therapists who combine lived experience and clinical expertise. We recognize that while therapy is an important part of maintaining overall well-being, Muslim women often face unique challenges to beginning therapy, and returning to it once they start. We aim to provide Muslim women with a welcoming, supportive, and respectful space where they can fully engage in and benefit from the therapeutic process, without having to leave their faith behind.
Our approach is holistic, evidence-based, collaborative culturally humble, and anti-colonial.

Whether you’re facing stress at work, feeling disconnected in relationships, or navigating emotional challenges, I’m here to guide you through the process of healing and growth.

I use both traditional talk therapy, emotion and somatic methods based on the issues presented and the client’s comfort level.
Difficult life experiences can make coping with daily events challenging. Some people isolate themselves in a variety of ways due to fear of burdening or not being understood by those around them. For others, unprocessed adversity from childhood can leave them feeling a disconnect from the world, loved ones, and even their own bodies. The affects can be feelings of depression, anxiety, shame and/or self-doubt. Counselling is a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can explore the parts of yourself you have difficulty exploring elsewhere and get tools to help you live the life you want.

Feeling secure within ourselves is our birthright, but it’s often not what our experience offers. Perhaps you find it difficult to trust others, or connecting in a meaningful, consistent way. You might be easily anxious, self-doubting and ruminating, frequently wondering how you’re being perceived. Or you find yourself distant, closed off, but longing for safe connection. As a therapist for the past 10 years, I collaborate with reflective, high performing adults as we teach their nervous system new ways to feel trusted and embodied safety, so they can thrive with deeper connection, confidence and authenticity.

My approach is trauma-informed, blending psychodynamic therapy with somatic techniques by exploring how unconscious patterns rooted in your past influence your emotional and bodily experiences.
I support individuals who navigate through trauma, anxiety, and depression. I have an interest in working with individuals who experience chronic conditions, including neuropsychological conditions like bipolar disorder and epilepsy, drawing from both knowledge and personal history. Using an integrated approach that combines psychodynamic, trauma-focused, and mind-body techniques, I tailor therapy to individuals' unique needs. Within an anti-oppressive and queer-affirming framework, I provide a space where you feel seen and supported. Rather than just managing symptoms, we explore the deeper patterns shaping your experiences.

I use an integrative, relational, mind-body approach and have specialized in complex trauma and dissociation, having trained extensively in EMDR, DBR, Structural Dissociation (parts work), Here+Now Work & somatic-relational modalities such as the Hakomi Method.
It’s not always easy being human, is it? I find that the greatest gift of therapy, when there is a strong air of compassion, presence and curiosity in the therapeutic alliance, is the ability to reclaim our needs, our full range of feelings, our joy and our aliveness. While building skills of mindfulness, self-compassion, and embodied awareness, I believe there is immense possibility that lies in our unfolding wholeness, waiting to be discovered - creative choice made more accessible, when we're less held back by our fears, our core beliefs, and pain that we've had to organize around to survive.

In using compassion and non-judgment, I believe in a collective-modality approach, combining mindfulness, somatic-work, and IFS to help you achieve your specific therapeutic goals.
Feeling "not good enough" can take everything out of us.
Whether it stems from trauma, depression, anxiety, disordered eating, or anything else in between, this "not good enough" belief leaves us feeling unsafe in ourselves and unassured in our future. My aim in this work is to create a collaborative pathway forward for you that tends to the wounded parts of your self and accesses strength in vulnerability.
Working from a warm, healing-centred lens, I emphasize the necessity of a collaborative and open therapeutic space. Let's end the cycle of not "enoughness" and build the safety and security needed to make your healing happen.

Through the integration of EMDR, Somatic therapy and other evidence-based psychological modalities, I guide clients on a transformative journey.
When was the last time you experienced harmony with your core principles? At Hartwell Counselling, I provide a compassionate and transformative therapy rooted in evidence-based practices such as EMDR. EMDR which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and its the gold standard for treating and processing trauma. EMDR reduces trauma symptoms in a shorter time frame than the traditional talk therapy. Many clients have reported a reduction of traumatic symptoms after the initial few sessions of EMDR. EMDR is not a magic cure for trauma but it might produce some symptoms relief.

How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.
Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.
Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.
What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
