Are you pregnant and overwhelmed by the changes in your body and surprised by how your relationships are being impacted? Are you struggling to move past something about the birth that’s interfering with your ability to be present and connect with your baby? Are you experiencing
postpartum
anxiety or depression? Do you feel like you’ve lost yourself?.
Becoming a mother doesn’t just happen at the moment a baby joins your family. It is a physical, emotional and spiritual process of transformation that can begin before conception and continue for years after birth. It can be joyful, unfamiliar, and difficult. If you are somewhere in this process - from wanting to have a baby to being in the throes of new motherhood for the first or a subsequent time - you may be experiencing a rollercoaster of feelings.

The stress surrounding the journey to, transition into and experience of motherhood is often not spoken about and can feel overwhelming and lonely. We are taught to rely on our personal support systems, but what happens when those supports are removed or limited? Negative thoughts can creep in: hopelessness, sadness, and self-doubt cloud your vision. I offer therapy for those who are struggling to cope with a role transition, experiencing grief, low mood, distressing thoughts, infertility,
pregnancy
,
perinatal
mood disorders, parenting a child with a mental health diagnosis, or feeling isolated and alone.

I have specialized my training in Infant Mental Health and am pursuing my PMH-C from
Postpartum
Support International.
The decision to start a family is fraught with myths, expectations, and ideals. In reality, parenthood is different for everyone, and filled with ups and downs of enormous magnitude. When we try to fit parenthood into a perfect box, we leave little space for people to create their own story. If you are planning a family, expecting a child, have recently had an infant join your family, are struggling with parenting your young children, and/or are feeling disconnected from yourself and your loved ones, therapy can be helpful for you!

As a mom of three and survivor of
postpartum
depression, I get it.
Being a mom is hard. You’re tired (so tired). You’re overwhelmed by all of the things - some of which you were prepared for, and many that you weren’t. You give so much to all of the people in your life - especially your kid(s), and at the end of the day, there is nothing left for you. You may be sad, anxious, angry, or lonely. You no longer recognize your life. You no longer recognize yourself. Please, know this: You are not alone. It is possible to find your joy, and to feel like yourself again. You are worthy of this, and so much more.

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?
The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.
When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?
Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.
How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?
A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviours. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
