My practice offers counselling to young people, adults and specialized separation/parenting services for families. Challenges experienced by clients may include: navigating family change, stress, anxiety, peer/romantic relationships, self-regulation, and managing behaviours (ADHD, OCD, ODD ). As a Collaborative Family Professional, I work with parents wanting to minimize conflict for their family as they go through transition and change. I provide emotional support throughout the out-of-court process, help caregivers build skills to co-parent, and neutrally facilitate meetings during the collaborative process.

Life events impact us. Some more than others. Psychotherapy treatment can focus on stories of what has happened, the ways in which we have been affected, and how our perspectives can change.

While the experience of pain is universal, each one of us has a relationship to it that is specific and unique. I believe that every one of us has the ability to alchemize that personal experience into growth, awareness and ultimately, positive change. My passion is working with people in that process, and helping them discover their inner resilience and strength, while offering a variety of tools that can last a lifetime. I take a collaborative, compassionate, and non-judgmental approach to therapy services for individuals, couples and families.

Psychoanalysis is a way to understand and overcome different levels and forms of stress generated by challenging events or deficits occurring in human life. Those undesirable events are sometimes too intense to affect human personality and cause suffering and challenging existential moments. In those moments, we feel the emotional need for personal psychological support that implies not only professional readiness and personal maturity to help but also concrete humanistic values cultivated in our professional ethics. In my years of practice, my focus has been centred around individuals from different walks of life (i.e race, religion, sexual orientation). Particularly, ones who have trauma, body image issues, low self esteem, phobias and/or are anxious, depressed, stressed, destructive, angry, lonely, abused and in or have been in the child welfare system. In regards to my approach, I am genuine and compassionate, but remain equally honest and direct. Rather than bombarding clients with endless questions, I aim to engage them through meaningful methods and effective interventions.

(I have limited availability, no after work appointments. New clients who have been fully vaccinated, for in-person sessions only.) Entering therapy can be a daunting decision. What can I tell you that might make this step easier? Every person's therapy is unique. It will follow your life, both past and present. Primarily, therapy will be a safe space where every worry or concern you have will be acceptable for discussion and analysis. It may frequently be difficult. I can assure you that 'the talking cure' can bring about deep and long-lasting change in your life.

Oppositional Defiance (ODD) Counsellors

What is the most effective treatment for oppositional defiant disorder?

The treatment of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) will involve multiple approaches designed to help both the youngster and their parents, sometimes including medication. A therapist will help a child learn ways to regulate their emotions, curb their impulsiveness, and counteract anger, defiance, and disruption, while showing parents ways to bring these lessons into their home. A technique designed for children with conditions like ODD, known as Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), may also be used. CPS addresses a child’s concerns and rewards appropriate responses while discouraging harsh punishment or criticism.

How does treatment for oppositional defiant disorder work?

Treatment for ODD addresses the issues underlying a child’s defiance and disruption, the emotional regulation and impulse-control skills they lack, and the way adults respond to them. ODD therapy is based on the idea that children with the disorder understand the difference between right and wrong, that they want to behave well, and that, with help, they can. By responding to the child with empathy instead of harsh criticism, ignoring nonviolent behaviors, and rewarding positive actions, a therapist, and the other adults in a child’s life, can help children improve their behavior.

How long does therapy for oppositional defiant disorder take?

Therapy for oppositional defiant disorder is not a short-term undertaking. Depending on the severity of a child’s symptoms, their age, the presence of other conditions like ADHD, anxiety or a mood disorder, and their family dynamic, it can take months before improvement is noted. The cooperation of parents and teachers is crucial, because the skills learned in therapy must be practiced in real-world situations, with all their potential triggers.

Does oppositional defiant disorder go away?

ODD can remit following treatment. ODD is often diagnosed in nursery school, and early intervention is essential for a positive prognosis. In two-thirds of children, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, symptoms resolve within three years.
