Have you spent your entire life being ‘nice’, always putting others’ needs before your own and neglecting yourself? Do you feel that your ‘nice’ nature is being exploited and undermined, leaving you feeling nervous, insecure, confused or exhausted? Are you tired of hearing that the most toxic person in your life is a ‘nice’ person, when you know that they are actually narcissistic , intimidating, controlling and egotistical? I understand what it’s like to have a person or situation in your life that although at times supports you, also sometimes puts you down, makes you question yourself and believe that you are the problem.

I offer therapy for narcissistic abuse recovery, either caused by neglectful parenting or abusive relationships.
I believe that no matter what you have been through, there's always a way to move forward and start to heal. Even in the darkest of times, there's a glimmer of hope and a desire to feel at peace and safe. What matters is that instead of giving up, you are seeking help and that means you are getting ready to use external and internal resources to move past what's causing you distress. I take an individualized approach that is tailored to the needs of each client. I believe in providing a non-judgmental atmosphere where you feel safe to be yourself.

She:kon/Hello! My name is Jenny Patterson and I am the founder of Bear in Mind Healing, a private practice based in Cobourg, Ontario. I believe that Mother Earth is a garden and we are the flowers (her children) and that part of my purpose is to help those flowers grow. One of the reasons why I love being a social worker and what drives me to do this work is my own lived experiences. I am not only a survivor of narcissistic abuse and domestic violence, but I am thriving! What I find beautiful is being able to walk with folks on their healing journey for just a little while; creating that safe and nurturing space, that connection.

As a survivor of narcissistic abuse myself, I have done extensive research, certifications and trauma therapy to understand and heal from the effects of narcissistic abuse.
If you are involved with a pathological narcissist, and even if you're not sure, you are probably feeling confused, uncertain and most likely (because you are here!) at your "wits end". Narcissistic abuse is REAL and difficult to heal from on your own. Our brains are "plastic" and become "damaged" from the "Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde" behaviours of reward and punishment from the personality impaired individual we've tried hard to accommodate, causing us relentless internal conflict (I want to leave/I cannot leave). I will help discern what you've encountered, how to deal with it, and how to move forward. For more info: www.marthadigby.com

CONFUSED, drained or ALONE in your relationships? Are you putting the needs of others before your own? Are you changing yourself (like a CHAMELEON) in order to feel appreciated? If the other person becomes your main focus and you modify your behaviors and subjugate your needs to keep the relationship going at any cost, you have codependency. CODEPENDENTS are MAGNETS for entitled, narcissistic personalities. The ensuing relationships can stumble along for a LONG time, requiring huge amounts of effort and energy to keep up until finally they fall apart. When they do, you feel betrayed and abandoned (codependent's biggest fear).

Some of my areas of exploration and experience are: relationships – co-dependency, narcissistic behaviours/patterns, trust issues, grief/loss, anxiety, burnout, rumination, self-esteem/self-worth issues, over-responsibility for others & people pleasing and caretaker roles, inner child work, core issues.
I am meeting each person exactly where they are in their journey with integrity, compassion, kindness, active listening and unconditional positive regard. We will work together to enable you to recognize and identify patterns of behavior or emotional pain that can pose problems in managing difficult situations and relating effectively to others. We can also work together in creating a step-by-step plan to support you in getting from where you are to where you want to be, in embracing your unique qualities and strengths that you have, in addressing any challenges you are currently facing in your daily life.

Sometimes life is harder than we know how to handle. You want someone who is supportive and compassionate to explore your life with. You could be looking for support during a difficult time or recovery after a difficult ending or experience. You might have some confusion as to why things are going wrong in your relationships which you hope to strengthen or repair. Perhaps the pandemic turned life upside down and you are trying to find your balance again. Maybe you struggle with narcissism or have suffered in a relationship with someone who does and are looking for a therapist who can understand that pain.

Change is a difficult and humbling process. Being patient, kind, and forgiving of ourselves is not usually something we learned as children. Talk therapy is not advice or guidance: it's learning to hear your own decision-making processes, noticing feelings and what needs your trying to meet, discovering your value systems, and moving forward with small deliberate changes. Together in session we will tailor the work we do to suit your specific concerns. Researching therapists, going to therapy, looking at our least helpful patterns, or deliberating on whether to stay or leave a difficult situation takes courage. I congratulate you.

Unlock Your Inner Transformation with Client-Centered Psychotherapy. As a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), I offer person-centred therapy to adults to help them unlock their inner transformation and find clarity and meaning in their life. Person-centred therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach which emphasizes a focus on the client's internal thought process, feelings and experiences, instead of focusing on diagnosing and labelling them. This therapeutic approach allows clients to take an active role in their therapy by leading the process, while also providing support, empathy, and unconditional positive regard.

I was originally trained as a medical doctor and practiced as a psychiatrist for 10+ years before coming to Canada for psychoanalysis training. In addition to my training in psychiatry and psychoanalysis, I also had training in family therapy and cognitive-behavior therapy. I am currently practicing as a psychoanalyst and a registered psychotherapist in great Toronto area. However, my clients come from whole Ontario and around the Canada. I also provide online/telephone treatment for people overseas. In addition to clinical psychoanalysis and psychotherapy services, I also teach and provide supervision for therapists and in-training therapists/psychoanalyst.

Narcissistic Personality (NPD) Counsellors

What type of therapy is best for narcissistic personality disorder?

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is best treated with talk therapy, which could involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, gestalt therapy, or similar approaches. A therapist will help a patient uncover the feelings that may drive their behavior and discover how to engage with themselves and those around them with greater empathy and understanding, fewer demands, and less defensiveness, with the goal of developing a more authentic sense of self that enables healthier relationships.

How do therapists treat NPD?

By developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and continually focusing patients on relationships, community, and connection, a therapist, through talk therapy, may be able to help someone with NPD change. In sessions, a therapist will help an individual achieve relief from their current stressors, including the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression. A therapist may also help an individual to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms, learn new ways of interacting with others, and eventually become able to feel and display empathy.

Can a narcissist be cured with therapy?

Therapy can be effective. After a serious setback or great loss, someone with NPD may be forced to recognize that they are not immune to life’s challenges. That can spur feelings of melancholy and depression that lead them to seek professional help. Once an individual decides to seek help, they have already taken a step that the majority of those with NPD never will. Still, people with NPD often quit therapy as they naturally resist feeling vulnerable, being challenged, or admitting to flaws.

How can you get narcissistic personality disorder treatment for someone?

It is notoriously difficult to convince someone with NPD to seek help. With their feelings of superiority, they may be unlikely to recognize or acknowledge that they have a problem, or that their problem is narcissism. Sometimes, they are aware that they are arrogant and that others resent them but they don’t see it as a problem because they are convinced of their superiority. People with NPD have trouble maintaining relationships, but family members and others who do feel close to them, and whose presence they value, may be able to encourage them to seek therapy.
