Multiracial Therapists in Toronto, ON
I believe you are more than the concerns or fears that bring you to therapy. You have the capacity to grow, heal, and move forward—sometimes you just need the right support and tools to strengthen your emotional resilience. In our work together, you remain the expert of your experience; my role is to help you make sense of what you’re feeling and guide you toward a direction that feels most authentic. I understand that starting therapy can feel intimidating, especially when it may be hard to find a practice that understands your community’s challenges. I aim to build a space where you feel safe to explore your personal experiences.

My work is informed not only by clinical training, but also by lived experience. I am an immigrant and a survivor of war, and I have engaged extensively in my own trauma-focused therapeutic work. This dual perspective allows me to understand, with depth and discernment, the psychological impact of conflict, displacement, and prolonged survival states.
Many individuals I work with are highly capable and resilient—often strong, responsible, and outwardly composed—yet internally burdened by unresolved trauma, emotional fatigue, or entrenched relational patterns shaped by survival.

I support clients who are neurodivergent (ADHD, autism), queer, and/or from immigrant families to build their self-esteem and cultivate meaningful relationships. I also support students and working professionals navigate burnout and career transitions.
Poor boundaries, people-pleasing, and relationship anxiety can come about when you consistently receive the message that your needs are not as important as somebody else's. Although masking your genuine self may have aided you through difficult times, losing touch with who you really are will only bring you farther from what you actually want and need.

As a biracial therapist, I offer a deeply validating, culturally nuanced space for multiracial, marginalized, and racialized individuals who feel like something is fundamentally off.
When your nervous system is stuck in overdrive, standard talk therapy isn't enough. I integrate CBT and DBT with somatic tools like Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT/tapping - check out my profile video for a quick demo!). By releasing physical tension and regulating your body, we calm the chaos at the root so you can finally feel steady, grounded, and safe.

I’m here to listen. Sometimes the path forward involves accepting who we are today, making new choices, or seeing our past in a clearer light. When you feel overwhelmed or unsure of yourself, finding compassionate support makes all the difference.

Currently accepting virtual clients!
Are you feeling burned out, stuck in anxious overthinking, or repeating relationship patterns you can’t seem to break? Many of my clients are high-achieving adults who learned early on to walk on eggshells and anticipate others’ needs, often at the expense of their self-esteem. With over 14 years of clinical experience, I help clients unlearn these survival patterns, heal attachment wounds, regulate their nervous system, strengthen boundaries, and reduce shame so they can feel more grounded, confident, and aligned in relationships, identity, and life transitions.

Reality bites. Hard. I believe people can bite back - and learn to be nourished. The trouble is, we develop patterns of relating and being in the world where we get stuck, no matter how hard we try. With a lifetime of accumulated coping strategies, some having become sources of stress rather than relief, we come to feel alienated, ashamed and alone with difficulties and traumas, lacking hope for something better. Change is possible. Emerging from conditioned isolation into meaningful contact with others is hard work, tremendously uncomfortable, yet profoundly liberating. Individual therapy is one path to help with that process.

Have you spent years in therapy, personal development, coaching, or self-help, yet still find yourself stuck in the same emotional patterns? Perhaps you understand your anxiety, relationship struggles, perfectionism, people-pleasing, burnout, or past experiences intellectually, but meaningful change still feels out of reach. Many of my clients are highly capable, insightful, and successful in their careers, yet continue to feel held back by unresolved experiences and nervous system patterns that traditional weekly therapy has not fully addressed. I help clients move beyond insight and into lasting transformation.

I foster a safe refuge where you can begin to unpack your lived experiences free from judgment. While honouring your story, I offer support in exploring what's working and deterring you from where you'd like to be. In doing so, pathways can be created to explore healthier ways to cope, live a more meaningful and authentic life, gain greater insight, and communicate your needs and boundaries with others. My approach to therapy is trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, strengths-based and draws from intersectional feminist theory. I integrate somatic therapy, mindfulness, Hakomi, narrative therapy, CBT, and learnings from neuroscience.

You're holding...a lot! Maybe you're raising a child with a disability or neurodivergence while quietly running on empty. Maybe you're navigating the gap between the culture you grew up in and the life you're building now, and nobody around you quite understands the weight of that. You keep showing up for everyone else. Therapy is a place to finally show up for yourself. Drawing on over 10 years of front-line experience, I work with caregivers, young adults, and people carrying the unique complexity of immigrant and multicultural identity: the code-switching, family obligations, and the feeling of never fully belonging.

Many of my clients are high-functioning people quietly carrying the weight of anxiety, unresolved trauma, or grief. They are managing well on the outside. Inside, something has shifted and they know it. They come to me when they want more than someone to talk to. They want a clinician who will actually do the work with them.
I returned to private practice after years in organizational leadership because this room, with one person in it, is where real change happens. I bring 25 years of clinical depth, EMDR certification, and a genuine commitment to getting it right for you specifically. In-person and virtual, across Ontario.

Something in life may be leading you to be curious about therapy right now, and I'm glad you're here. I often journey with those who are seeking a space where they can naturally show up as themselves, reconnect with parts of themselves they may have lost or forgotten along the way, and embrace new versions of who they are becoming. To nurture this experience, I prioritize establishing a strong therapeutic relationship that is collaborative and rooted in trust & respect.
I work with clients who may be experiencing, anxiety, depression, burnout, relationship challenges, identity concerns, racial trauma, and life transitions.

Dr. Tanaya Chatterjee Psychologist | Trauma LGBTQ
Psychologist, PsyD, CPsych

Toronto, ON M5S
I am especially interested in supporting racialized and LGBTQ+ communities with issues like immigration, socialization, racism, discrimination & in providing culturally adapted therapy.
Thank you for being here! I am a clinical psychologist, and I help folks facing emotional, relationship, and behavioural challenges. I specialize in trauma treatment, including PTSD, developmental, racial, interpersonal trauma and domestic violence. I also support people dealing with grief, anxiety, OCD, depression, and personality disorders. In my work, I recognize how our beliefs, values, and worldviews—often shaped by past generations—affect how we see ourselves and function in daily life. I believe we do not need to be "fixed." Instead, we work together to become the person we want to be.

FAQ - About Multiracial Counselling
Why might mixed race or multiracial identity be important to address in therapy?
Mixed race or multiracial identity can shape how you understand yourself and relate to others around you, so it is natural that this identity may be important to speak about in therapy. If you identify as mixed race, you may find it helpful to speak with a therapist about identity, belonging, racism, cultural disconnection, or feeling pressure to “choose” one part of your background over another. A therapist who understands or shares your mixed race identity may be better able to support conversations about your experiences. A shared background may also strengthen the therapeutic alliance, which refers to the working relationship between you and your therapist and is tied to positive therapy outcomes.
How can a mixed race therapist support couples counselling or family therapy?
Like other therapists, mixed race therapists can support couples and families with a broad range of concerns, including communication challenges, conflict, parenting, life transitions, and relationship stress. However, therapists who personally identify as mixed race may be especially helpful when race, culture, or ethnicity are part of the concerns being discussed, such as when partners come from different cultural backgrounds and are navigating differing personal or community expectations. A mixed race therapist may also help couples and families explore how identity shapes each person’s experience in the relationship. Family members, for instance, may not experience race or culture in the same way, even within the same household. Therapy can offer a space to talk through these differences.
How might I inquire about a therapist's experience working with mixed race or multiracial clients?
The initial consultation, which is typically a brief phone or video call, can be a good time to ask about a therapist’s experience working with multiracial clients. You can ask specific questions, such as “Do you have experience working with multiracial clients?” or broader questions, such as “How do you approach cultural identity in your practice?” As sessions begin, it can be helpful to notice how the therapist responds to your concerns. A good therapist should respond with respect, curiosity, and cultural humility. If you feel dismissed or misunderstood, or if you find yourself having to explain your beliefs or cultural context constantly, it may be worth considering another therapist.
Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of mixed race therapists?
The directory of mixed race therapists includes therapists who have shared their mixed race or multiracial identity in their profiles, as well as therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with mixed race clients, regardless of their own background. Not all therapists choose to disclose this information on their profile, and these individuals may not appear in search results for this reason.
