These include mindfulness, psychodynamic therapy, cognitive or dialectical behavioral therapy, and relational therapy.
I shape my approach to my clients' needs and circumstances, as no two people lead the same lives. To almost everyone however, therapy can offer a judgement free reflective zone, laying the groundwork for growth and wellness. Whether it is events in your past, specific challenges in the present, or worries about the future, therapy can provide the much needed insight and perspective. In addition to this, I make sure to set mutual, achievable milestones with my clients, to give direction to the work we will do together.

Taking the first step to reach out to a therapist is one of the most important investments you can make for your wellbeing. My clients benefit from my 23 years of experience in the field, and from my own experience of the transformative power of therapy. My approach is relational, attachment, emotion focused. In working with some clients, I also incorporate mindfulness and the expressive arts. I am a certified Emotionally-Focused couples Therapist (EFT); and am trained in AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy) for working with individuals.

I am trained in emotion-focused, cognitive-behavioural, humanistic, DBT, and mindfulness approaches.
As a psychologist, I work with change. Change may involve shifts in awareness, attitude, behaviour, goals, acceptance, or coping strategies that will enhance your quality of life and well-being. Many obstacles can prevent us from living a satisfying life. These could be a history of trauma, invalidating relationships, habits that no longer serve us, or environments that may hinder our psychological growth. I can help you identify obstacles to your quality of life, develop strategies to tackle them, and set goals to increase and maintain your well-being.

I have extensive training and work with techniques proven to help including: Adult Attachment, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Psychodynamic approaches, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Mindfulness skills.
Feeling alone? Sometimes we find ourselves disconnected, insecure, anxious, angry, sad and exhausted - at ourselves, the world, our family and friends. We don't know what to do about it and it can make us feel utterly alone. I would embrace the opportunity to support you to find a path forward and move more easily and authentically through life. My speciality is working with people with self-criticism, or low self esteem (often attachment related) - which present as loneliness anxiety, depression, ADHD, emotional dysregulation and struggles in relationships and life transitions (jobs, relationships, new stages of life).

I have many years of experience using a variety of approaches; CBT, DBT, ACT, psychodynamics, mindfulness, + others.
I offer warmth, genuineness, empathy and humour as you wind your way through the complexities of living a life of meaning, despite inevitable challenges. I will hold a safe space, provide support, and help you reach your therapy goals, whether that be practical coping strategies, identifying and working with emotions past or present, or getting in touch with your inner wisdom (because we ALL have inner wisdom). I come to sessions with my own humanity open wide, because connection is a fundamental need and foundational to the work of therapy, which can be gut-wrenching and profound at the same time. I'll walk that path with you.

I am trained in, and use elements of CBT/DBT, mindfulness, strengths based and solution focused therapy in my practice.
Hi there. Are you feeling overwhelmed? Maybe feeling stuck or that your thoughts are all tangled up? Do you feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders? Like you're not doing enough? It's okay, I have been in your shoes, too. As a first generation Chinese Canadian, I understand that sometimes things feel like they are out of control and the need to make sure everyone else is taken care of is a higher priority than ourselves. With your trust, let's work together to set healthy boundaries, untangle those thoughts, and taking care of yourself without feelings of guilt.

Specializing in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness-Based Therapy, I’ll help you skillfully navigate the mind and your emotions so you can start to function most optimally where it matters most.
Life is full of demands and responsibilities that can feel overwhelming. Emotions and self-defeating thoughts can interfere with you feeling and performing at your best. You want something to change but untangling these patterns seems too difficult. When you learn to harness your emotions and thoughts they can begin to work with you and not against you, allowing you to take ownership of your life. I believe this resilience is a skill we all have the capacity to acquire. My goal is to make mental health therapy practical and effective, so you can live a happier and more productive life.

Through my personal journey I’ve come to appreciate the power of incorporating creativity and mindfulness in therapy.
In therapy, you have the opportunity to hit the pause button on life for a moment. During this time it’s all about you—your thoughts, struggles and dreams. It’s a space where you can be fully accepted without judgment, just as you are. As your therapist, my focus is on listening to you with empathy, curiosity and compassion. I’m here to help you uncover more about yourself and move towards what is meaningful to you. I work in English and French with diverse clients facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, life transitions and self-esteem concerns.

In therapy, I draw from empowerment, strengths-based, trauma-informed and mindfulness based techniques.
I work with racialized, LGBTQ+, and immigrant communities, who are experiencing issues related to anxiety, depression, ADHD, and trauma related to their intersectional identities and experiences. I work well with individuals who are open to exploring their emotions and thoughts in a safe and non-judgmental space. They seek a therapeutic relationship where they can foster self-awareness, identify patterns of behavior that may no longer serve them, and cultivate healthier ways of relating to themselves and others. I encourage collaborative approaches with clients, and aid in facilitating their personal growth and empowerment.

Welcome, courageous human. If you recognize your patterns (& still struggle to change the harmful ones) . . . if you find yourself overwhelmed/triggered all over the place by the state of this world, or your family, or your relationships, I see you. Come in to the courage room. (The good news: you're already there, in the courage room of your brain-body-spirit.) If you want to heal: betrayal trauma (including sexual assault, incest); anxiety or stuckness; or require support during a big transition, please reach out. (FYI, my hypnotherapy work is different than regular therapy. Learn more about both here: www.karenconnelly.ca).

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
