I've been a therapist for 15 years, working with adults, caregivers, youth and children. The themes I work with include relational difficulties, family conflict, parenting, life transitions, loss, trauma, immigration, sexual orientation, anxiety and depression. I believe culture, gender, race and other identities play a role in our lives, as do safety, connection and trust. I aim to honour and create space for these qualities and my style is collaborative and conversational. I also believe in lived experiences and I try to bring mine, such as being a parent and an immigrant, to practice.

I lost 100lbs and currently kept it off for eight years (I started August 15, 2012). I remember at my heaviest weight, I wanted to talk to someone who had been there, done that & understood I so badly wanted to change and my frustration at not changing. I wanted someone who could quiet my mind when it worried about my weight and help me gain control of my body and life. I know what it's like to start losing weight, only to abandon the effort shortly thereafter. If you repeat that pattern and put your health and quality of life at risk, then you likely feel that there are issues that need to be addressed psychologically - I can help!

Everyone is unique and presents their own challenges. Through education, experience, authenticity, and a touch of humour, I employ a number of different modalities to counsel individuals and families. Though I lean on an integrated narrative-existential approach through a person centred focus, I also use solutions-focused therapy, psychodynamic therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, as well as acceptance and commitment therapy and cognitive behaviour therapy. I can provide short term therapy, but I am also in for the long haul with you.

Not accepting new clients at this time. My approach to therapy is practical, creative, humorous, and interactive. Engaging in therapy is a vulnerable and courageous step, and I aim to foster a comfortable, collaborative process. When the tools and skills that were previously helpful are no longer working, I support clients to cultivate new coping skills, and identify potential areas for change and/or acceptance.

I enjoy adult clients of all ages. Couple therapy is a specialty; I have advanced training, and have taught couple therapy. Even in child issues, I find working with the parents may work best. Individuals who are committed to living more productively and fully and enhancing their relationships will find me supportive and encouraging. I have a particular passion for working with elderly clients who even in their 80s are interested in understanding / improving their lives. At the moment I am working with a woman in her mid-80s and helping another, 80-year old woman to get comfortable with her computer so that we can zoom.

On the outside, you look like you've got it altogether. On the inside, you feel anything but. Your thoughts are racing, disorganized, overwhelming, and you don't know how to make them stop. It's the bad kind of familiar and you can't believe you're back here again, or still stuck. Maybe you've even tried therapy before and it didn't work. I can help. I work to make therapy fit YOU and not the other way around. My approach is holistic, strengths-based, and grounded in therapeutic approaches supported by evidence and extensive training. While there's no magic bullet, personalized therapy is the best kind of help.

Do you tend to put others' needs before your own? Struggle to speak up for yourself in your relationships? If so, you may have an overactive “people pleasing” part. You're willing to go above and beyond for others, but self-care feels foreign. You hide your vulnerability to stay strong for others and feel uncomfortable reaching out for help. Deep down, you struggle with self-esteem, and tend to feel inadequate, despite having a lot to be proud of. You just want people to like you, but you feel you have to earn it. You yearn to feel unconditionally accepted and valued, and to feel entitled to self-advocacy and healthy boundaries.

You feel uncomfortable speaking up. You don’t like saying no to others. You feel like you aren’t so great at what you do, and you feel that you aren’t lovable. You wish you could have more confidence. You wish you could feel more comfortable in social situations, and you wish you knew how to be more compassionate towards yourself. I know what its like to struggle with low self-esteem, and I know you want to develop a better sense of self. I know that these feelings might stem from your childhood experiences, that they come with anxiety and that they really get you down at times. I’m here to help.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same background to be able to work together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of cultural forces, such as discrimination, that may contribute to that client’s concerns. With a professional who has such training, a client should feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues without feeling that they need to self-censor.

How can I recognise an effective Jewish therapist?

As with members of any religious or ethnic group, just because two people happen to be Jewish does not guarantee that they will share the same values, knowledge, or experiences. A Jewish client seeking a therapist who shares their cultural identity, or for whom it’s important that a therapist share their religious beliefs, may want to discuss a professional’s Jewish background with them before beginning therapy. For someone who seeks justification for major life changes in their religious tradition, or in biblical writings, finding a therapist who is comfortable framing guidance in that context may be especially valuable.

Would a Jewish therapist have unique training?

No, but they should have the same training and certification as any other mental health professional, as well as experience with a range of evidence-based techniques such as cognitive-behavioural therapy or mindfulness-based therapy. A therapist with this type of experience should be able to help any client feel comfortable and safe, which is essential for a therapeutic alliance. Once this is established, a potential client may want to find out more about the therapist’s Jewish background.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with Jewish clients?

A client can directly ask a therapist if they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and if so, whether these individuals sought counseling for faith-related issues or marital or familial issues in which their Jewish background was a factor. A client may also wish to ask a potential therapist whether they incorporate Jewish teachings and values into their own professional work.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Jewish therapists?

The directory of Jewish therapists includes professionals who have opted to share their cultural background on their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their background, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and/or communities.
