The backbone of my practice is
Gestalt
Psychotherapy. In my work, I am committed to honoring my clients with compassion, presence and integrity. My sessions often include mindfulness-based approaches, encouraging the use of awareness as a powerful and curative ally. When we become aware of our patterns and limiting beliefs we can then willingly, courageously choose differently and embrace another way of being. My hope is that I may be of service and provide guidance as this process ushers you to a place of healing and transformation.

Therapy is a powerful process that can open you up in ways that are familiar and unexpected. It can be both scarry and beautiful. But what is most important is that you trust and feel safe with the person you are opening up to. As a
Gestalt
trained humanist psychotherapist with over 20 years of varied therapeutic experience I make the cultivation of that relationship and your trust the foundation of our work. Once this co-created safe space is established, no matter what shows up in sessions – fear, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, trauma, depression, family issues, alienation, substance use, feelings of inadequacy -

From a
Gestalt
perspective, our most valuable resource is our ability to develop, boundary, maintain and build healthy relationships.
With 15 years of experience as the head counsellor at The Michener Institute, I offer professional support for anxiety, depression, grief, trauma and family challenges. My use of both
Gestalt
Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) gives me a wide range of options for support for both individual and couples.
Gestalt
focuses on the 'here and now,' our body experiences and childhood patterns and helps us be present in our relationships. CBT has been rigorously tested in over 1000 studies, and is a therapy that supports depression, attention deficit disorder (ADD), panic and anxiety, phobias and stress.

Trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship issues, LGBTIQ+ issues, conflict, shame, and self-esteem can interrupt our daily lives and prevent us from healing. Dan’s insight,

Gestalt
Psychotherapy.

Therapy is not easy and there is no quick fix, but I am here to work with you, hear and understand you, and support your self-discovery process. I want to learn about your story, path and beliefs, and together with you identify areas where you have strengths and areas where you need to explore and try new ways of being.

In these fields, I blend trauma-informed,
gestalt
therapy with somatic interventions to support you in your healing.
I believe we are doing the best we can with the tools available. From my perspective, trauma can get locked in the body if there isn't enough safety to respond in the moment. I will support you in building on the wisdom you already have, and will creatively explore with you the places you feel stuck, shaky, or unmet. Through a relational and experiential process, I will bring attention and compassion to your suffering and untended needs. You can expect me to be warm, direct, steady, and responsive. Additionally, I am Queer & Trans affirming, kink-aware, and knowledgeable around polyamory/non monogamy.

What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behaviour, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.
How does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.
How long does gestalt therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.
Does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
