All of us struggle at times with worry, or temper, or feeling insecure. But for some of us these problems take over- limiting our relationships, narrowing our sense of options in life. If you would like to claim back your life and your relationships from the influence of problems and problem stories, I would like to help.

My goal is to provide a safe and supportive landing space for my clients amongst their busy weeks. Every client comes to therapy with unique needs and I tailor my therapeutic approach to best fit those needs. I know that a strong therapeutic relationship is the key to successful therapy and my clients often share how hard it was to find the right therapist. I connect with my clients by taking a realistic, personable, and collaborative approach to therapy.

At the heart of compassion focused therapy, is befriending ourselves and our humanness, as we navigate the challenges and pain that are part of our life journeys. Cultivating an inner ally and creating a place of safe refuge is foundational in quieting the harsh voice of self criticism, and making room for a more compassionate voice to emerge. Whether you are seeking guidance in navigating the impact of life stresses, losses, transitions, burdens, anxieties or depressions or are on a path of personal growth, I am devoted to supporting you in being with yourself in kinder, gentler and self honouring ways.

Often in life we can move on ‘auto pilot’ and be surprised when we feel hijacked by things such as anxiety, anger, substance abuse, depression, etc. I will aid you in processing your reactions and learn how to better identify and communicate your emotions. We are all carrying so much on our backs. Be it childhood experiences, trauma, anxiety, work or school stress, insecurities, self doubt and so much more. I will support you in finding the skills to tease apart, challenge, and cope with these issues.

I believe that we all experience brokenness. I believe in the power of being heard with compassion and empathy. I believe that we can learn how to be kind with ourselves when we experience kindness. You might be thinking about therapy because you want to work through a problem that persists in your life, to make a big choice, take a new step, sort through a past experience, or you simply want to feel better. Whatever brought you here there is nothing too big or too small to bring into our therapeutic space. This is your time.

I am an experienced therapist with 34 years of practice to draw upon. I will listen carefully as you describe the issues that you need support and help to sort out. Often, an increased understanding of the challenges that you face can be very helpful to move forward in your life. As well, learning some new skills to manage the issues and/or gaining a new perspective on the issues can be useful as well. I appreciate that it is not easy to embark on a therapy course so I make every effort to be supportive and understanding as we build a therapy relationship.

Growing up in Canada as the daughter of first generation immigrants has taught me the importance of cultivating a self-narrative that is both compassionate and curious; a part of myself that I can call on during times of uncertainty, pain, and turbulence to help me repair and reconnect. How we view ourselves is related to how we feel inside, and the kind of relationship we build with those feelings is important. When we are disconnected from our feelings, we often experience being stuck. I wish to work together with you on this journey to become unstuck – to provide support, honesty, and take witness in your transformation.

I would like to invite you into a non-judgmental, nurturing, and anti-oppressive space, where we can work together to address the challenges in your life. Sometimes life can bring hardship and unexpected events, which can produce negative feelings and emotions. Some of these challenges require less support to process and work through, while others may take longer and require more frequent support to overcome. As your therapist, my goal is to understand you, your needs, and guide you to cope with or overcome the difficulties interfering with your everyday life.

How to find hope? If you are feeling overwhelmed, engaging in therapy can help you feel calm again. You have BIG responsibilities! — With little time and less energy! You may feel pulled in many directions ... as a student, worker, caregiver, provider... You may feel distressed, confused, and empty. You may have lost a sense of connection to who you are and what you want - because of BURNOUT, stress, and overwhelm! I too have felt I was losing control; it can be frightening!

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
