I have worked with a wide range of populations in various settings and have a special interest in working with Asian women looking to work through racial and intergenerational trauma and/or currently struggling with anxiety, depression, life transitions, career, cross-cultural issues, family conflicts, relationships and self-worth.
Hot take: Everyone can benefit from therapy. I spent years of my life wanting to hide my feelings from the people around me because of the stigma surrounding mental health—particularly as a second-generation Chinese Canadian woman . Once I began to accept these feelings and embrace them as part of the human experience, I was able to embark on a (life-long) journey of healing. When I discovered firsthand how transformative therapy can be, I realized I wanted to work with other individuals in assisting them with their journeys.

I am a cisgender woman , with Mi’kmaw and Settler roots; as a result, the holistic therapy I provide is rooted in an anti-oppression approach. I was lucky enough to earn a Master of Social Work from the University of Buffalo. I chose that program because, unlike most other programs, it offered a specialty in utilizing a Trauma-Informed Focus. I was also trained in using EMDR. I have six years’ experience providing therapy; first in the USA and now in Canada. I’ve also provided services in community settings like the youth justice system and a community task force created to help deal with the human trafficking epidemic.

My therapeutic style is warm, accepting, flexible and conversational. I believe clients are the experts of their own lives and I approach our work together with curiosity and humility. As a queer and neurodivergent woman , I understand how the systems we live within shape our lives, and am committed to an intersectional, feminist, anti-oppressive approach to therapy. I take an eclectic approach with clients, pulling from different modalities to best suit the needs of the client and what feels right for them.

My approach focuses on empowering women , clients in general, in their quest to know and free themselves on a deeper level, to live more meaningful and purposeful lives, to overcome every crisis, traumatic experiences and recreating self-image and building self-confidence while finding joy, grace and pure love for life as an inherent part of our true nature.
Unfolding, experiencing and living our authentic selves is what I am passionate about. I am highly skilled in guiding clients in accessing and exploring obstacles that are results of our deeply rooted beliefs. Unquestioned beliefs or limiting thoughts that can manifest as anxiety, depression or other psycho-emotional difficulties can actually be guiding lights on our journey to our true Selves. The essence of our being remains untouched as we grow and is waiting to be found and reconnected with. When you connect on a deeper level with your Self, your purpose, gifts, and talents show in their fullness and potentials show up.

My lived experience as a queer woman is deeply important to me.
Do you feel like you don’t know how to ask for help, or feel like you have no one to turn to? Do you feel like there’s a part of your identity that you need to explore? Have you tried other therapists before and it felt too stuffy or like you didn’t ‘click’? Hi, I’m Steph and I see you, thank you for being here. I am here to remind you that it is okay to be feeling exactly how you feel, all of your feelings are valid. I bring my whole self to our sessions with a grounded, curious and kind demeanor and really focus on fostering a genuine therapeutic relationship with you. I believe that therapy should feel less clinical and formal.

As a mature woman and Mother of three, I bring many years of experience.
You enjoy being in control of your circumstances, confident in the decisions you are making, and clear about where you are headed. However, there are times when you feel overwhelmed and uncertain. At these times you struggle to make changes and move forward. It is important to have a safe place to talk about your feelings, work through your fears, and gain some understanding and clarity. I believe no one knows you better than YOU do. It is my privilege to work with you as you journey through the process of self-discovery. I have experienced many changes in my life that have allowed a deeper understanding of the human experience.

As a mixed-race, Filipino/Guyanese second-generation Canadian woman , I value culturally integrative care.
Kindly note that I will be away until the beginning of June and will be putting new clients on a waitlist for late-June 2023. Are you struggling with your mental health, or are you overwhelmed with life's challenges? People are more anxious, stressed, and worried than ever about managing their relationships, work, and lifestyles. Your mind and body might experience long-term issues if you overlook your needs and don't take time for yourself. Pursuing a better life shouldn't be so challenging, and you deserve mental health support that aims to comprehend your experiences and needs and to help you achieve a happier and healthier life.

As a Christian woman , it’s hard navigating your experiences of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Your pain and suffering makes you question “If God is good, then why hasn’t he healed me? Is there something wrong with me? Do I not have enough faith?” Maybe past painful experiences of abuse or neglect haunt you and you can’t seem to forgive and move on. Depression and anxiety feel out of your control leaving you scared and hopeless. You pray and pray and pray and it doesn’t stop. Maybe you’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t help as you hoped. You desire and need the peace promised in the bible but it feels so far away.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
