When your past lives on, you aren’t being fair to your future! You may feel like you are reliving the same old story and stuck in a repetitive pattern of negative thoughts, behaviour, and emotions with no way out. As a therapist, I walk with you to revisit these old stories and guide you to change this pattern. We will have an open conversation where you bring the knowledge of your life and I bring the knowledge of how a change can happen. My experience as a therapist has taught me that people need to be understood in an open, nonjudgmental, supportive and nurturing environment. Part of my job is to provide this environment.

Traumatic events from the past affecting your life today? You may be experiencing symptoms such as anxiety, hyper vigilance, insomnia, nightmares, flashbacks, numbness and the need to keep yourself busy, or self-medicated. This is affecting your work and your relationship with your loved ones and yourself. You may also have been referred to try out EMDR therapy, by a health professional. I specialize in treating anxiety, low self-esteem, PTSD and dissociation, stemming from past traumas. I focus on the mind-body connection and value an integrative approach to healing that examines the root causes behind your challenges.

Our efforts to protect ourselves from painful feelings often lead to greater suffering. Fleeing from our emotional truth, we unconsciously perpetuate the very distress we seek to avoid, repeating unhealthy relationships or self-destructive patterns of living. We may find ourselves overwhelmed by anxiety, anger, despair or emptiness, feeling like our lives are not our own.
It takes courage to explore our feeling-life and face the emotional truth of our past and present. I offer a safe, reliable and uniquely human environment in which to cultivate future possibilities of integration, spontaneity, creativity and self-realization, to fully inhabit life.

There are moments in our lives where we feel stuck or moments of crisis where we have done things that we don't feel ok about. We may be living with persistent fears, thoughts, and behaviours that frighten us, or no longer align with who we are. We may experience difficulties in our relationships or trouble managing the world. We may suffer from current experiences of harm and violence, the wounds from our past, or repeating patterns and behaviours that no longer serve us. In these moments, it’s important to have a space to process our fears, pain, and our hopes while building skills, self-compassion, and a vision for ourselves.

Sometimes despite our best efforts, we can't make sense of what's happening to us. We can't understand our own actions and behaviours, our feelings are too painful to bear alone, and we're trapped in repetitive, unconscious patterns of relating that harm us and others. Establishing a relationship with me can change all of that. Listening with compassion and without judgment, I can help you to make sense of your experience. And making sense of your past and present will lead to a joyful and lasting transformation of your sense of self, your relationships, and all facets of your life.

Life can be very overwhelming, and often finding the right therapist can help us to cope with life's many challenges. I am a licensed therapist specializing in the fields of trauma, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and family/relationship conflict. In the past, I volunteered as a crisis aid line worker, then as a psychotherapist in a community agency for 6 years where I was lucky enough to train for 1 year with a renowned psychiatrist who treats individuals who experienced trauma. 12 years ago, I began my private practice in psychotherapy and I truly love what I do. Sessions are offered virtually or by phone at this time.

I am a cisgender woman, with Mi’kmaw and Settler roots; as a result, the holistic therapy I provide is rooted in an anti-oppression approach. I was lucky enough to earn a Master of Social Work from the University of Buffalo. I chose that program because, unlike most other programs, it offered a specialty in utilizing a Trauma-Informed Focus. I was also trained in using EMDR. I have six years’ experience providing therapy; first in the USA and now in Canada. I’ve also provided services in community settings like the youth justice system and a community task force created to help deal with the human trafficking epidemic.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Counsellors
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.
Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.
How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
