With 15 years of experience as the head counsellor at The Michener Institute, I offer professional support for anxiety, depression, grief, trauma and family challenges. My use of both Gestalt Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) gives me a wide range of options for support for both individual and couples . Gestalt focuses on the 'here and now,' our body experiences and childhood patterns and helps us be present in our relationships. CBT has been rigorously tested in over 1000 studies, and is a therapy that supports depression, attention deficit disorder (ADD), panic and anxiety, phobias and stress.

Often that suffering is related to trauma or adverse life experiences, and gets expressed as depression, anxiety, relationship problems, feeling too much or too little, PTSD etc.
We all have natural capacities to right ourselves when things go wrong, but we usually don’t feel that way when we’re looking for therapy. Instead, we often feel stuck and alone, overwhelmed by our feelings and unsatisfied in our relationships. I work with people who want to get unstuck and connect to their innate capacities for growth and change. My main goal is to help you have a positive and true experience of yourself and deeper connections with others.

I do very well with people experiencing worries, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem or anger -- whether the suffering is related to relationship issues,or when conscious triggers are not apparent. My approach is warm and empathetic, and I relate to my clients as partners on a joint quest for greater self-awareness and better quality of life. I am never a passive observer. I do offer much comforting and soothing, and I give plenty of emotional, involved feedback based on my 40 years of experience as a psychologist and psychotherapist. I do use cognitive behavior therapy when indicated or requested.

My experience has been with individuals (youth and adults) as well as with couples and families.
I am an experienced therapist with 32 years of practice to draw upon. I will listen carefully as you describe the issues that you need support and help to sort out. Often, an increased understanding of the challenges that you face can be very helpful to move forward in your life. As well, learning some new skills to manage the issues and/or gaining a new perspective on the issues can be useful as well. I appreciate that it is not easy to embark on a therapy course so I make every effort to be supportive and understanding as we build a therapy relationship .

I like to help clients gain new perspectives, gently challenge and encourage change and growth. I work with individuals and couples as well as parents to help them better understand themselves and their relationships with others in their lives. Exploring issues of failure, loss, fear, shame, anxiety and depression can be scary, but with the help of a psychotherapist it can be less intimidating and ultimately liberating. Working collaboratively with my clients in an empathic, non-judgmental and safe space, I am passionate about helping them improve their relationships, deal with difficult personal issues and life transitions.

Relationship / Personal Development/ Life Coach. Our relationships help to define who we are as individuals. They are necessary. They can be wonderful. And they can be all-consuming and debilitating. Whether romantic relationships, friendships, family, or even those with work colleagues, these human interactions require exceptional communication and a great deal of work. Harmonious relationships are often unattainable alone and thus can become the cause of great stress, procrastination, and self-doubt; but with proper guidance, relationships can offer the opportunity for connection, growth and meaningful collaboration.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
