My clinical orientation is rooted in cognitive-behavioural and
Buddhist
philosophy.
Thank you for being here! I work with adults who may experience emotional and behavioural difficulties. I specialize in treating anxiety disorders, OCD, depressive disorders, personality disorders, PTSD, racial trauma, grief and loss, and other relational problems. I also work with those who have experienced childhood trauma. In my work, I consistently and sincerely acknowledge the importance of the transgenerational impact of acculturation on our beliefs, worldviews, and sense of self. I genuinely believe that we are not broken, so we do not need "fixing;" instead, we work to be the self we want to be!

I have spent more than 10 years studying healing methods with not only top psychologists in the field of therapy but I have also travelled the world and studied with
Buddhist
and Christian monks at various monasteries, lived with shamans indigenous to the Amazon and learned from religious leaders in the First Nation and Sufi communities in North America.
"I believe one of the bravest things you can do is to begin to understand your own story." I have dedicated my life to build a practice where people can come to a place of peace, where you feel comfortable and safe to unburden yourself about the most intimate and personal aspects of your life without the fear of being judged or shamed. This process allows you to shed the layers that keep you going in the same cycles and help you start a new and more fulfilling chapter in your life. Calling a therapist can be intimidating, but I hope you will take a moment (and maybe a deep breath) to call and see how I can help.

I primarily use Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and
Buddhist
Psychology as the basis for my work with people who have experienced trauma, complex trauma, vicarious trauma, and developmental trauma.
I offer individual therapy to adults (18+) who are interested in exploring the complexities of their past in order to understand who they are today. This work is connected to understanding the relationships around us, our grief, and our identities. We will also explore behaviours that may be getting in the way of leading the life you want, for example, confusion about identity, self harm, suicidal ideation/behaviours and relationship patterns. I welcome people from various social locations, including from the queer/trans community, and offer a sex-positive, Anti-Racist and Anti-Oppressive space.

Me? I'm mixed race, body-centered, anti-oppression, and
Buddhist
.
You? You're probably awestruck by the beauty of this world but also heart-broken by the cruelty of some of the people in it, and enraged at the injustice. Maybe you have unimaginably intense emotions that you struggle to surf, a quick mind but difficulties connecting with others, creative impulses you can't quite express (or not as fluidly as you used to), or are in a relationship where one of you is a POC and the other isn't and you're just trying to make your crazy love work. You might be a healthcare provider needing to replenish your own well, or a therapist seeking an empowering Clinical Supervisor.

My vision of body, mind and spirit integration model of practice reflects the
Buddhist
mandate of great compassion to others and self.
I work with people from all nations and cultures, and I work more with adults in my practice and with some Chinese when I also speak both Mandarin and Cantonese. Life is never smooth. From time to time, we need to seek help from others to face the challenges. As a professional psychotherapist, I am keen to journey with you through your life difficulties such as traumatic events, life changes, loss, and grief. I will help you to identify your own feelings, emotions, values, faith, and strength to face your life problems causing stress, anxiety or depression etc. Hopefully we work together to find meaning and transcend life changes.

I bring the body awareness of my longstanding practices of
Buddhist
meditation, mindfulness and yoga/ movement into my work in a collaborative way to encourage the deepening of the conversation between body and mind.
Feeling stuck is painful. Seeing the same issues and patterns arising time and again despite all efforts to move past them can be disheartening. I can support you to look deeply, with body and mind, into what is happening. Together, we welcome all the parts of you, even the wounded or troublesome ones, to the table where they can be honoured and learned from with compassion and curiosity. As your clarity and self-awareness increase so will your capacity to make conscious choices that are in line with the life you wish to lead.

Mindfulness teaches us how to relate to ourselves with kindness. I understand how the struggle to avoid or control difficult experiences can leave you feeling like your own worst enemy. Mindfulness is a different strategy. It's about learning to feel at home in our own bodies and our minds - even in times of trouble. My work is grounded in my own personal practice: a 20 year meditator with 14 years as a mindfulness educator, I'm a graduate of a
Buddhist
seminary with a master's degree in Counselling psychology and specialized training in working with trauma and abuse.

My ideal client is one who feels ready to let go of an old pattern that no longer serves them. This takes awareness, courage, and compassion. You might be in the beginning stages of change, and just getting to know the problem, be it anxiety, depression, problems in relationships, or a life transition. You may have made significant change already, having implemented good habits, but reached a plateau and now wish to develop these good practices further. I support my clients by meeting them where they are at, making values-based decisions from a calm, clear place, and accessing mental flexibility wherever they are stuck.

When difficult times come, people are drawn to look at themselves. The habitual patterns of personality and relationships may no longer work or may be unsuited to who you are now. Feelings like shame, guilt and loneliness are painful. Unconscious defenses that protected you in the past can create problems rather than solve them and can actually inhibit your growth and freedom in the present. Therapy can increase self awareness, improve relationships, vitalize your sense of self, help you to discovery meaning and purpose, provide solutions to problems and reduce feelings of distress. Therapy is like a renovation. 30 years experience.

Sometimes life seems difficult, and we may feel like nothing is working. We may feel lonely, isolated, filled with self-doubt, depressed, anxious, overwhelmed, hopeless, and helpless. We long for connections, while afraid of being hurt. We hope that someone can listen to us and validate our emotions, suffering, and struggles; we hope to be seen, heard, and cared for. However, it can be scary to reach out for support, showing our vulnerabilities and not knowing how others will respond to them. My wish is to create a safe space for you to share your experiences, struggles, and emotions. I am here to be with you and listen to you.

You are on your way to deeper growth. I know because you are on this site, actively looking for support. Well done, you. Although, right now it may still feel a little rough. Fair enough. Being human is hard. Regardless of your very human issue: trauma from the past; stuckness in life; relationship issues; out of control anxiety and stress; chronic illness; career struggles; or just feeling lost and confused, the key to moving forward lies within you. Looking inward to see your own values and beliefs is the beginning to accessing your strengths to continue to grow and thrive.

The focus of my work is supporting people to unearth, examine, and transform stagnant ways of being. Through exploring personal narratives, habitual responses, and the subconscious terrain, we work together to create fresh space and open to new ways of being. Sessions with me involve talk therapy with somatic exercises and hypnotherapy woven in as is supportive and appropriate. I am warm and grounded, and keep the session energy flowing through active inquiry and deep listening. Working at a pace that feels safe and supportive for you is key, and so I regularly check in to ensure that this is your experience.

Susan works with individuals from all walks of life who may embrace a range of mental health needs. She recognizes that each individual may need to seek therapy for a number of reasons, such as receiving support during tremendous transitions in life; to face and endure new challenges; or even to deal with the difficulties that one may encounter. Susan believes that every individual has the innate capacity to cope with the challenges that life offers, but it can be difficult to access these abilities from the experiences that each of us have had before.

Congratulations for finding the strength to start the process of healing and transformation. Are you seeking a kind guide and compassionate support to find your way through some difficult or challenging territory? Or perhaps you are carrying something that you need to set down? Sometimes emotions can be profoundly powerful and maybe you would like to feel a sense of mastery over your system again. Maybe you know something is just not right but it is hard to define in a way that releases it.

Do you feel stuck, unable to go back and uncertain how to move forward? You might be questioning what is meaningful in life. Perhaps you have experienced trauma, broken relationships, unfulfilled hopes and dreams, and loss in all its forms. It can feel like you are struggling to keep your head above water, or that you are being pulled between the memories of the past and fears of the future. I've been there in my own journey of healing, and I know that uncertainty and change can cause trauma to resurface. I also know how powerful a supportive, caring, and empathetic therapeutic relationship can be in healing the wounds of the past.

How can I find a therapist in Toronto?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
How much does therapy cost?
Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $300 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
