In my private practice as an expressive arts therapist I use the arts along with conversation and reflection, to help clients get ‘unstuck,’ uncover resources for change and growth, live with suffering when necessary and celebrate the joy of life as we humans always have -- by making meaning through making
art
. Increasingly, I also draw on Internal Family Systems (working with our "parts") to support and inform a safe and effective healing environment. I work with clients suffering from anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, creative blocks, eating disorders, physical illness, grief, trauma and sexual abuse.

I work from a model of health, balance and empathy by bringing into awareness the places where we get stuck and our unique ways of getting there. You know best when your patterns of coping are no longer working. A therapist's job is to support you in creating positive shifts in your life. This support may sometimes feel frustrating, especially when our familiar patterns of functioning are being challenged. I incorporate
art
, humour and paradox in sessions allowing for a creative, spontaneous exploration of your needs, contradictions and feelings and by providing a safe space where new possibilities and hope are possible.

A clinically trained MSW, RSW, RP (Masters degrees (Pratt Institute and Smith College), ATR-BC (Registered
Art
Therapist) I specialize in talk and creative therapies.
Do you wish things were different? I work with diverse clients facing life's transitions and challenges. My theoretical framework is relational, using both talk therapy and/or creative/expressive arts modalities. Following your lead, I listen/witness and attune carefully in order to attend to your specific need. We start with where you are most comfortable, which means that talking, imagery, dreamwork and silence are all welcome. Although I work flexibly between short term talk therapy (psychodynamic psychotherapy) and expressive/creative arts, we safely build our relationship, while co-creating in our therapeutic studio space.

I am a registered psychotherapist (qualifying) and a certified
art
therapist.
My passion is to engage with clients who are struggling with mental health issues and for which traditional talk therapy may not be the most helpful modality. As a certified professional
art
therapist, I seek to help my client find meaning, purpose, and ultimately their inner voice through the creative process. A client may come into
art therapy
seeking relief from a variety of issues but later find that they can oftentimes find wisdom from within.
Art therapy
can jog such a process where words sometimes fail. The goal of my practice is to cultivate and nurture this inner voice, and so help my client to develop greater confidence.

Hello! My name is Mafalda, and I am a qualified
Art
therapist who has experience working with youth and adults in both individual and group settings. Hmm,
Art
therapist? It means that I combine psychotherapy with the process of
art
making to help you explore and process emotions and thoughts that may be sometimes challenging to express into words. Many people believe you must be ‘good at
art
’ to benefit from
art therapy
, however, this is not the case. You “do not need any
art
experience” at all! In addition to
art therapy
, I often integrate various therapy approaches and mindfulness tools depending on your specific goals.

I can help you reclaim parts of your self that you avoid or may fear through
art
and embodied dialogue.
Life can often feel chaotic. The reality is that changes are presented to us outside of our control and we find ourselves faced with the task of making decisions and choices that will decide the course of our future. These untimely decisions and choices can leave us feeling bewildered and disoriented. To complicate things further, we can find ourselves stuck in emotional and behavioural patterns that inhibit and hold us back from making the decisions we would like to or that would be best for us. Sometimes it’s difficult to even know what we would like to do or what is best for us. What should you aim towards?

How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.
Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.
How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.
What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
