Do you ever feel like you are your own worst critic? Do you have trouble ‘turning off’ the negative thoughts in your head? Or do you spend too much time worrying about the future or dwelling in the past? I work with adults who are experiencing low self-esteem, self-criticism, and anxiety. Putting the brakes on your busy life and slowing down to look inwards can help you from seeking distractions or unhealthy habits when feeling unwell. It takes courage to ask for help, explore meaningful questions, and demonstrate self-love. The way to self-love can have different meanings for each of us, depending on our life experience.

Do you struggle with anxiety, low self-esteem, or trouble connecting with others? Have you tried things on your own to feel better, but they haven't helped enough or they're not helping as much as they used to, and you're not sure what to do next? Are you confused and discouraged because a part of you knows what you need to do to change, but you can't seem to get started on it, or stick with the plan? That's where counselling comes in. I'll work with you to help you get unstuck, and start living a life where you're not held back by your issues. I'm especially knowledgeable about how to help clients who struggle socially.

As a 1.5-generation Chinese Canadian, who grew up in an East Asian immigrant household, it has shaped and informed my life and practice in many ways. Therapy can be a transformative and empowering experience. I will work with you to develop a deep personal awareness and support you on the path toward healing, learning and growing. Finding a therapist that is a good fit for you is essential. We'll be a good fit if you are motivated, self-reflective and ready to tackle the daunting task of “figuring it all out.”

In therapy, you will explore “what's wrong for you” instead of “what's wrong with you”. There is enormous potential for self-awareness and self-growth with help from a listening, caring, and attuned therapist. I provide Relational Therapy, which holds that there is great potential for healing, growth and change from within a therapeutic relationship. I meet my clients with great respect, as a fellow traveler in the therapeutic journey. My wish is to cultivate a safe space for my clients to experience their emotions and encounter their beliefs about themselves.

I believe life is lived in a gray zone and there is rarely a black-and-white solution to problems. When it comes to navigating challenges it is essential that we check in with our personalized beliefs, opinions, perspectives, and values. Each person has a different set of lived experiences that shape what is important to them, and I prioritize identifying each of these factors so you can feel self-assured as you move through life. These skills are essential when developing identity and building self-esteem.

I help people address depression, anxiety and
self esteem
by connecting with curiosity, compassion, and the wisdom of the body.
I view therapy as a creative process. A creative process requires connection, trust, and a sense of humour. I bring over a decade of experience in the arts to my work as a psychotherapist. I have spent my life working in supportive spaces where we try things, fail productively, and sometimes have collaborative breakthroughs. Together we will investigate the nuances of your story and explore alternate ways of being with your thoughts and feelings, mind and body. A sliding scale rate is available to those in need of financial relief in order to access therapy.

Clients come to me when they're feeling overwhelmed and exhausted from trying to "keep it together all the time". Often, they're suffering from a combination of burnout, stress, anxiety, depression, fears or low self-esteem. They feel disconnected from themselves and unable to navigate even the simplest of daily challenges. They want support in learning how to reduce the weight of their emotional and physical tensions and regain confidence in their ability to navigate their daily lives.

“I know I have people who care about me, but I still feel alone.” “People tell me I’m safe, but I still feel scared.” “I know it’s not my fault, but I still feel guilty.” If any of these thoughts sound familiar, you are not alone. It is incredibly common for one part of our brain to feel that things are wrong, even if we don’t fully understand why or know what to do about it. In my personal and professional life as a queer, brown, and trauma-focused therapist, I have seen that therapy can help us process our past experiences and create a space for us to heal.

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
