Do you feel stuck in your anxious feelings? Perhaps you have intrusive thoughts or memories that are really bothering you. Maybe you have coping strategies that used to work in the past but are no longer as effective for you now. Is your anxiety also affecting your ability to be present and to function in the ways that you would like to in your relationships, work, or school life? If this is the case, do these issues then lead you to experiencing feelings of shame, wondering if there is something wrong with you, or questioning if things will ever get better?

I work well with clients who are self aware and/or have had therapy in the past, but feel stuck. They may be aware of how trauma from childhood impacted them, but are unsure of what to do next.

We enter psychotherapy for a wide variety of reasons: The death or loss of a loved one, illness, job loss, divorce, addiction, etc., but all of us seek help because we are trying to find a better way to deal with the reality we are facing. My job as a psychotherapist is to help you talk about your emotions and reactions in a safe environment, figure out where these emotions and reactions are coming from, observe whether your reactions produce the desired outcomes and, discover new ways to react, if that would produce more desirable outcomes

I am currently not accepting new clients but please reach out if you need referral advice. You might be here because you are searching for someone to help you with how you're feeling. You may feel anxious, depressed, stressed, like you don't measure up, or stuck and are hoping to find a compassionate listener. Perhaps you're dealing with big life transitions, issues between you and your partner(s), marginalization, interpersonal conflict, finding your purpose, or competing priorities. Bringing any of this to therapy can be scary. There is profound healing power in being courageous, listened to, validated, and encouraged.

In this complex world it is easy to feel fragmented. Regardless of our chronological years, healing requires that we address the issue of meaning. Who am I now? Where do I fit in the world? Why is there suffering? How do I move forward? To answer these questions, it is helpful to address the world head-on, and then engage in a process of self-reflection and integration. Most importantly, we need to acknowledge who we are as individuals, here and now.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or province where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
How much does therapy cost?
Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $3200 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
