From a Gestalt perspective, our most valuable resource is our ability to develop, boundary, maintain and build healthy relationships.
With 15 years of experience as the head counsellor at The Michener Institute, I offer professional support for anxiety, depression, grief, trauma and family challenges. My use of both Gestalt Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) gives me a wide range of options for support for both individual and couples. Gestalt focuses on the 'here and now,' our body experiences and childhood patterns and helps us be present in our relationships. CBT has been rigorously tested in over 1000 studies, and is a therapy that supports depression, attention deficit disorder (ADD), panic and anxiety, phobias and stress.

The backbone of my practice is Gestalt Psychotherapy. In my work, I am committed to honoring my clients with compassion, presence and integrity. My sessions often include mindfulness-based approaches, encouraging the use of awareness as a powerful and curative ally. When we become aware of our patterns and limiting beliefs we can then willingly, courageously choose differently and embrace another way of being. My hope is that I may be of service and provide guidance as this process ushers you to a place of healing and transformation.

We may use songwriting, learning an instrument, music production, improvising, gestalt work, dream analysis, movement, coaching, whatever most serves the aliveness.
Do you suspect music holds a key to becoming the person you are here to be? I work with people of all walks of life with a wide variety of concerns, issues and desires. Let musicality be the torch that lights the dark places. Activate your creative-relational-self, the one that is not only healed and whole, but who knows where to go to bring all of yourself into the light and to give your unique gifts to the world. You are enough. You are Unique. There is a place in this world for you. The symphony of Life is waiting for your notes and rhythms.

In my eclectic approach, I offer various strategies and techniques from Transactional Analyses/CBT, Gestalt Therapy, Family/Couple Therapy, Psychodrama and Transpersonal Therapy.
Unfolding, experiencing and living our authentic selves is what I am passionate about. I am highly skilled in guiding clients in accessing and exploring obstacles that are results of our deeply rooted beliefs. Unquestioned beliefs or limiting thoughts that can manifest as anxiety, depression or other psycho-emotional difficulties can actually be guiding lights on our journey to our true Selves. The essence of our being remains untouched as we grow and is waiting to be found and reconnected with. When you connect on a deeper level with your Self, your purpose, gifts, and talents show in their fullness and potentials show up.

My approach is integrative, but pulls largely from somatic therapy, mindfulness, Internal Family Systems, Gestalt , and relational therapy.
I work with clients who are undergoing any experience that might be called 'transformation.' Sometimes transformation is forced upon us by external events, and sometimes we are called to it from within. Either way, it can be a difficult process to navigate alone. My aim is to provide clients with a compassionate, empowering, and insight-evoking space in which they can process pain and grow into their truest self. I welcome clients from all walks of life who feel that they would benefit from a more embodied and imaginative approach to therapy.

With diverse and broad training in Relational, Gestalt , and Somatic Psychotherapy, EMDR, Structural Dissociation Theory or Parts Work, Polyvagal Theory and Nervous System Regulation, Mindfulness and Embodiment, and EFT, I adapt the therapy to each client’s unique needs.
Do you feel like you’ve gotten too far away from who you really are, or who you want to be? Together, we will bring awareness to where you have been, where you are now, and where you want to go. While insight is essential, true transformation comes not just from being aware of how the past has influenced the present, but by processing through the mental, physical, emotional, and neurological remnants of those previous experiences and embodying new ways of being. Therapy can help you gain the clarity, confidence, and courage you need to change your life.

My training is primarily in Gestalt therapy, which is a relational and process based therapy, and also studied Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Mindfulness and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
You may be reading this because you are feeling burdened by stress and anxiety and need help. You may lack the energy and excitement you once had. You may be experiencing the sadness and grief of a lost relationship or job, or even culture due to immigration. You may feel uncertain about your relationships. You may feel stuck in some repeated pattern of shame or feel overwhelmed with anger. Or you may simply sense something is missing in your life and not know what it is. I have years of experience in working with individuals and couples. I can offer you the support you need to build trust, and the challenge to make a change.

For over 9 years, I have provided therapy to hundreds of clients in emotional and physical pain informed by Mindfulness, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Narrative Therapy, and advanced certification in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
When you first come in to therapy, you may be feeling depressed, ashamed, deadened, anxious or frozen. You may believe your problems are "too much" to share with someone else, or that somehow you "should" be able to be "self-sufficient". I will listen to you, assist you in accepting yourself and all your emotions, respectfully challenge you where you need another perspective, and offer you curiosity and connection where you feel deadened or stuck. If your goal is to gain more ease, flow and comfort in relating to yourself and others, I can help.

Gestalt Counsellors

What is gestalt therapy?

Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behaviour, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.

How does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.

How long does gestalt therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.

Does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
