I enjoy using Narrative, Acceptance and Commitment,
EMDR
, Cognitive and Mindfulness based practices to help you explore and confront difficult emotions.
I work with individuals experiencing feelings of disconnection, anxiety, and self-criticism. Do you ever feel like you can't live up to your own standards or those of others? As though no matter how hard you try you remain stuck or unfulfilled? In a society that promotes speed, wealth, and unrealistic standards (of beauty, relationships, even self-care!) it can be increasingly difficult to find a space in which we feel heard and validated. When life prevents you from seeing the best version of yourself, I will see it for you, bringing your strengths to the forefront of our work together.

I use an emotional-focused, mind/body approach and am committed to providing non-judgmental, compassionate and collaborative care. Therapeutic approaches like
EMDR
and Somatic therapy are used to help safely address the traumas that persistently affect and dysregulate the nervous system and to support in re-training the brain and body to function more adaptively and with more ease.
Life is beautiful but it is also hard, exhausting, sad, messy and temperamental. Coping with the intense pressures and stress we face can be very challenging and isolating. I believe therapy is about having a relationship where we can safely and authentically explore and discover where we tend to hide parts of ourselves, run away, and hold back our truth from the world. Together we will explore this in a manner that welcomes and supports your whole being to foster an ongoing process of self-awareness, healing and self development - and towards you moving in the world with greater resiliency, authenticity and a deeper sense of self.

I have Level 3 training in the Gottman method, specialized certification in
EMDR

If you are searching for a respectful and non-judgmental couples therapist, chances are you've been struggling for a while, just hoping things will get better on their own. Whether the problem is infidelity or another traumatic event, lack of interest in sex, drifting apart in your relationship, or constant bickering and rehashing old arguments, the problems facing you as a couple can be overwhelming. It's natural to feel vulnerable and at the same time yearn for a safe place to talk it out with someone who can help.

I am committed to building a relationship that supports your unique needs, develops your strengths and fosters your innate ability to heal. Often, we aren’t afforded the time, opportunity or privilege to learn the most beneficial ways to sift through what comes our way. We tackle things as best we can using strategies learned from previous experiences. In some situations, our default strategies end up taking us further away from what we want. This can prevent us from fulfilling our needs - we may get stuck not knowing how to cope or how to move forward. I primarily use non talk-therapy modules of Structural Dissociation,
EMDR
, DBR.

Shé:kon! I'm an Indigiqueer, trauma-informed and open-minded practitioner who will affirm your strengths and experiences. People see me because they want support with concerns such as coping with the world, anxieties, fears or intergenerational trauma. They are looking for someone who offers gentle, non-judgmental and authentic support that is tailored for them and their needs.

We all know life can be challenging. However, sometimes parts of it can get too challenging, and we can’t seem to resolve our issues on our own, or even with the help we're currently getting. Whether it’s depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, grief, or stress (or a combination of these), the way we’d like to live our life can seem out of our reach. This can happen to just about all of us at some point. The good news is we don’t have to struggle alone and a professional can really help change things.

I use an eclectic approach and take from different evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions that I am trained in to establish an approach based on my clients needs, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Motivational Interviewing, and
EMDR
Therapy and Trauma-Informed Therapy.
We all face challenges in life and can lose a sense of ourselves. I strive to uncover a person’s authentic self, in allowing them to understand their purpose and bring empowerment and healing. During our meetings, it is important for me to create an alliance with you from a non-judgemental space that fosters trust. I value all parts of a person that are conflicted, afraid, ashamed, and parts that appear relentless.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.
Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.
What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimising its ability to trigger anxiety.
