The body keeps the score. I help trauma survivors live full, and connected lives. I have many years of experience working with survivors of intimate partner violence , sexual assault, as well as harmful, abusive, or neglectful childhood experiences. Trauma may impact your self-esteem, or create relationship issues, anxiety, alienation from the body, feelings of being disconnected from yourself and others. A central focus of my work has been supporting clients impacted by trauma without the lens of pathology. That’s to say: there’s nothing wrong with you at all. Your way of being in the world was developed as means of protection.

Mindfulness teaches us how to relate to ourselves with kindness. I understand how the struggle to avoid or control difficult experiences can leave you feeling like your own worst enemy. Mindfulness is a different strategy. It's about learning to feel at home in our own bodies and our minds - even in times of trouble. My work is grounded in my own personal practice: a 20 year meditator with 14 years as a mindfulness educator, I'm a graduate of a Buddhist seminary with a master's degree in Counselling psychology and specialized training in working with trauma and abuse .

I have a particular interest in working with clients who are challenged by anxiety, depression, interpersonal trauma/ abuse , & sexual abuse /behaviour issues.
Taking the first step to begin therapy can be very challenging. I strive to provide a safe and non-judgmental space for you to discuss/explore any issues you are experiencing. By deepening your ability to be introspective and self-compassionate, we can explore any negative thinking patterns/habits that may be interfering with you making changes in your life. My style is warm, compassionate, empathetic, and collaborative, but also direct and solution-focused. I specialize in working with children/teens/young adults, and have experience engaging even the most reluctant young people to promote positive change.

Often in life we can move on ‘auto pilot’ and be surprised when we feel hijacked by things such as anxiety, anger, substance abuse , depression, etc. I will aid you in processing your reactions and learn how to better identify and communicate your emotions. We are all carrying so much on our backs. Be it childhood experiences, trauma, anxiety, work or school stress, insecurities, self doubt and so much more. I will support you in finding the skills to tease apart, challenge, and cope with these issues.

Domestic Abuse Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
