If you find that you struggle with worry, anxiety, low mood, perfectionism, or obsessions and compulsions, we can work together to help ease some of these painful experiences, improve coping, and help you create a more fulfilling life. I work with adults and older adolescent clients, providing them with a warm, empathic, nonjudgmental space so that they can work to understand their experiences, learn and practice new skills, improve symptoms, cope with stressors, and nurture what is important in their lives.

While I am competent and comfortable working with all people, my focus is working with people who identify as men and adolescent boys as well as couples.
My therapeutic approach is centred on the client’s needs. Everyone comes from different and unique circumstances in life, and I believe that the therapy process should be unique to each client. For this reason, my approach is warm, judgment free, and draws on a variety of evidence-based therapeutic methods. Therapy can provide positive outcomes for a wide variety of reasons. My belief is that therapy itself can be a healing process. The act of sharing your thoughts, feelings, and worries is an essential step to a healthier and more fulfilling life.

I treat issues of mood and anxiety as well as more complex issues involving substance use and abuse and trauma. I also have special expertise and interest in personal goal-setting; cannabis (marijuana) dependence; and creative, gifted, and/or talented youth and adults with mood, underachievement, or multipotentiality issues. I work from a harm-reduction perspective and use a holistic lens to address problems. Using a mix of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and a systems perspective, I assess and address sleep hygiene, daily habits, personal relationships, and coping skills, and incorporate mindfulness and exercise into all treatment planning.

I believe it's always possible to reconnect with our strengths, joys, values, and desires, even in times when we feel stuck: when it's particularly hard to see the meaning in our lives, when feelings of regret outweigh feelings of acceptance, when shame and anxiety hold us back from engaging with ourselves and our loved ones. In my work with you, I want to point out those sacred parts of yourself that might have been forgotten. I want to help you see the different paths you can take, and be alongside you as you choose and move forward.

I work with individuals experiencing feelings of disconnection, anxiety, and self-criticism. Do you ever feel like you can't live up to your own standards or those of others? As though no matter how hard you try you remain stuck or unfulfilled? In a society that promotes speed, wealth, and unrealistic standards (of beauty, relationships, even self-care!) it can be increasingly difficult to find a space in which we feel heard and validated. When life prevents you from seeing the best version of yourself, I will see it for you, bringing your strengths to the forefront of our work together.

Teen Counsellors

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
