I have experience working in community residential mental health and addiction treatment centres for over 7 years along with extensive experience working in clinical treatment settings.
Change can be scary, however, growth lies in discomfort. I use a variety of techniques from my years of clinical experience to get to the root of the issues that may be affecting your well-being. Whether the problem feels small or big, old or new; I am open to bringing it into the room for closer observation and deeper discovery. Everyone has the capacity to change their lives. I recognize that we are each more than just our family, our relationships, our biology, or our circumstances, but also understand that our connection to each of these may profoundly impact our sense of wellbeing.

I have experience in mental health and addiction , especially behavoural addictions including excessive technology use, gambling, shopping, food and hypersexuality.
As a therapist, I have the privilege of meeting people at a critical point in their lives when they are looking to understand themselves better, make changes and deal with painful feelings. I think it is so important for people to have someone non-judgmental to talk to about what is going on in their lives. I look forward to the possibility of meeting and helping you with a challenging period of your life with some humour, humility and almost 20 years of experience as a social worker.

I have 5 years of experience working in community mental health with individuals struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, and addiction .
Do you have a difficult time looking at yourself with compassion and acceptance because the way you react, behave, and feel is wrong? Maybe it’s reacting with anger and defensiveness, or isolation and shutting down. Maybe it’s feeling like you are not smart enough. attractive enough, or simply not enough. Either way, you are left feeling ashamed of who you are. Imagine a life where you did not feel this way. You did not feel controlled by your emotions, you found joy in the ups and downs, and you look at yourself in a positive light. Beginning therapy is nerve-wracking, but I hope you take a moment (and a deep breath) to reach out.

I treat issues of mood and anxiety as well as more complex issues involving substance use and abuse and trauma. I also have special expertise and interest in personal goal-setting; cannabis (marijuana) dependence; and creative, gifted, and/or talented youth and adults with mood, underachievement, or multipotentiality issues. I work from a harm-reduction perspective and use a holistic lens to address problems. Using a mix of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and a systems perspective, I assess and address sleep hygiene, daily habits, personal relationships, and coping skills, and incorporate mindfulness and exercise into all treatment planning.

Are you afraid of feeling judged or misunderstood? My lived experience with addiction and mental health disorders brings a sense of allyship within the therapeutic setting. I believe that addiction is not the problem, instead, the problem is the problem. We will work together to understand the deeper challenges causing situational distress which can often result in maladaptive behaviours. Addiction can be in the form of substance use; or addiction to people, places or things. In addition to working privately, I provide psychotherapy for Addiction Rehab Toronto.

Have you or someone you love been faced with depression, anxiety, addiction , loss, or a traumatic life event? I have an extensive educational, professional, and personal background in these areas of specialty.
Greetings! I’m Samantha and I’m the founder of Curated Counselling: a practice built on a personalized and compatible counselling experience. Miriam Webster’s Dictionary defines “curated” as: “carefully chosen and thoughtfully organized and presented” - which is precisely what Curated Counselling brings to the table. In a mental health culture of cookie cutter and “one size fits all” approaches to healing, I strive to provide my clients with a personalized experience tailored to them and their individual needs.

I have over 13 years of experience in the field of addiction , trauma, and mental health.
Unresolved trauma, attachment injury, and old emotional wounds from the past create a fractured foundation. They affect our sense of self, make us feel empty inside, and lead us to believe that there is something terribly wrong with us. However, some symptoms that we experience as adults, such as excessive self-blame, addictive behaviours, anxiety, depression, a constant need to please others, sensitivity to rejection, and being easily overwhelmed, are caused by what failed to happen for us in childhood. Let me help you explore the part of you that was hurt and still carries the trauma and suffering.

As an addiction counsellor, I can help you regain control by delving into underlying issues and developing actionable tools you can apply immediately.
Have you found yourself increasingly using alcohol, substances, or addictive behaviors such as gambling? For a brief moment, it feels like you've found relief from stress or boredom, but as time goes on, the cost becomes apparent. You start losing grip on your life, watching as your health and relationships suffer. Deep down, you know that what once seemed like a solution has become the very problem you're struggling to overcome. The cycle of trying to stop can leave you feeling trapped and frustrated, wanting to regain your sense of self and live a fulfilling life, free from addiction . Luckily, change is possible.

I have worked as a counsellor since 1997 and currently work with adolescents, youth and adults who are struggling with addiction and mental health issues.
My practice is entitled 'Awareness: The First Step to Healthy Living' because I believe that if you are not aware of your strengths and potential and the nature of your relationships, it is not possible for you to move ahead in life. I treat serious mental health issues, addiction issues, eating disorders, mild autism, individual, couples and family issues (relational work), grief and loss, crisis intervention work, and, generally explore and build on positive self development.

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason, “interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
