At the core, my therapeutic approach offers a space that fosters collaboration and encourages free and open communication. The body keeps the score. I help trauma survivors live full, and connected lives. I have many years of experience working with survivors of intimate partner violence, sexual
assault
, as well as harmful, abusive, or neglectful childhood experiences. Trauma may impact your self-esteem, or create relationship issues, anxiety, alienation from the body, feelings of being disconnected from yourself and others. A central focus of my work has been supporting clients impacted by trauma without the lens of pathology. That’s to say: there’s nothing wrong with you at all. Your way of being in the world was developed as means of protection.

My area of specialty is gender based violence - focusing on intimate partner abuse, sexual
assault
, childhood neglect, and violence against sexual minorities.
I believe we are doing the best we can with the tools available. From my perspective, trauma can get locked in the body if there isn't enough safety to respond in the moment. I will support you in building on the wisdom you already have, and will creatively explore with you the places you feel stuck, shaky, or unmet. Through a relational and experiential process, I will bring attention and compassion to your suffering and untended needs. You can expect me to be warm, direct, steady, and responsive. Additionally, I am Queer & Trans affirming, kink-aware, and knowledgeable around polyamory/non monogamy.

I’m a registered social worker and highly skilled psychotherapist for over 15 years of clinical experience working with children, youth, and adults who are mainly survivors of
sexual abuse
. Sexual trauma can create long lasting emotional and psychological issues ranging from PTSD, relationship problems, trust issues, feelings of shame and guilt, eating disorders, anxiety issues, depression, addiction, self-harming or suicidal thoughts. It takes a lot of courage for someone to be ready for therapy in hopes for a chance to finally move on and not let the past continue to hold you back anymore.

I also work with both male and female survivors of
sexual abuse
and
assault
.
If you choose to work with me I will strive to create a safe, respectful and meaningful relationship with you. I will listen carefully, with empathy and without judgement. Sometimes I ask a lot of questions in order to understand, to the best of my ability, what things are like for you. In working together to help me understand your story, usually what happens is that things start to make more sense for you too. Confusion often gives way to clarity. Feelings such as anxiety, anger, depression and isolation often subside as well.

I have several years experience working with individuals in crisis, struggling with their mental health, and those who have experienced trauma including grief, victims of crime, sexual
assault
, and domestic violence.
*Now accepting clients* For so many, the hardest part of therapy is putting themselves first. When you’ve come to the point of accepting that you need support in overcoming challenges in your life, you may feel overwhelmed, beat down, tired, and low. Many of my clients feel a sense of relief following the first session where they’ve taken the first step in improving their life, relationships, and happiness. Therapy is work, and requires dedication to the process and to yourself.

I have experience helping clients understand, address, and overcome the multitude of issues they encounter as result of trauma, anxiety, depression, domestic violence, or sexual
assault
.
I am a cisgender woman, with Mi’kmaw and Settler roots; as a result, the holistic therapy I provide is rooted in an anti-oppression approach. I was lucky enough to earn a Master of Social Work from the University of Buffalo. I chose that program because, unlike most other programs, it offered a specialty in utilizing a Trauma-Informed Focus. I was also trained in using EMDR. I have six years’ experience providing therapy; first in the USA and now in Canada. I’ve also provided services in community settings like the youth justice system and a community task force created to help deal with the human trafficking epidemic.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
