To grow and to heal. This is a choice we can make. If you are reading this, you have already taken a step in that direction. Perhaps you are wondering if therapy can help you take some more steps. These steps can be in many directions – doing better, achieving goals, reducing distress, managing difficult emotions, understanding unhelpful patterns, dealing with
relationship
issues, coming to terms with the issues of the past, or seeking answers to life’s challenging questions. We arrive in therapy with our own unique expectations. My goal is to help you take the steps towards meeting those expectations.

Our feelings are a compass pointing toward personal growth and movement. I have learned to listen to and respect these feelings and I can help you to do the same. My approach is honed through years of clinical work with children and families. Through this developmental lens, I can help you bring context to your concerns, see unhelpful patterns, and change portions of the picture that don’t serve you so you can show up differently in small moments and in big ones.

As a member of the LGTBQ community, I try to bring an understanding of how both privilege and oppression show up in the therapeutic
relationship
.
Our ability to move happily and confidently through life is in large part informed by how our sense of self developed and exists today. Feeling emotionally unwell or stuck is often a product of unhealthy relational experiences or patterns.

I am Dr. Maura Ferguson, and I am a psychologist licensed in the state of California and in the province of Ontario. I work with adults,
couples
’, and adolescents. Looking for help for yourself or your loved one can be challenging. People from all types of backgrounds endure a wide range of hardships. The patterns and coping mechanisms we have learned may not be working for us anymore and frequently, it takes two minds, you and your therapist, to identify and work through psychological blind spots.

I most commonly support my clients in working through are:
relationship
challenges (especially with partners, family, friends, coworkers), body weight/body image issues, compulsive eating, anxiety, depression, difficulty with self-care, and compassionate communication.
Many of my clients come to therapy because they feel discouraged that the people around them appear to not understand the personal challenges they're facing in their lives. In attempting to talk about simple daily struggles, friends, family and co-workers often give advice or put a positive spin on what's hard. This can leave us feeling inadequate that we seem to be baffled by things that others appear to have figured out. As humans we need understanding and acceptance in order that we can continue to grow: and this is support you can find in good therapy.

I employ multiple approaches including Humanistic Theories to build our
relationship
, Psychoanalytic Theories to explore your inner motivations and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to learn new ways to think and feel about yourself.
If you find yourself in pain, depressed, anxious, grieving a loss, or going through a life transition, you might be feeling confused and overwhelmed. Often our thoughts and feelings can get tangled with our expectations leaving us unsure about how to move forward. In our sessions together we will explore what is working for you and what parts of your self are being challenged by the new circumstances. By developing greater self-awareness and practicing self-acceptance, you will begin to discover new ways to grow and strengthen as a person. When you know yourself well you can intercept unhealthy patterns of living as they emerge.

The day-to-day can feel like it’s too much sometimes. If you find yourself feeling constantly overstimulated, agitated, overwhelmed and unfocused- you are not alone. Shame may be speaking loudly and telling you that you’re the only one struggling in this way, that you are not enough. Together we can begin shifting your
relationship
with yourself, the inner critic, and the world around you. We can work towards finding your voice, your creativity and your authenticity even in the most challenging of spaces. It is possible to move to a place of fulfillment and purpose where you are empowered to be a compassionate ally for yourself.

There are times in life when events or experiences overwhelm our ability to cope, and it is a courageous act to seek out help and support. I believe therapy should be a collaborative and creative process between client and therapist that involves all aspects of oneself, so that wellness can be experienced in an integrated and sustainable way. Working in the field of holistic wellness for the past seven years, with a specific emphasis on mental health and trauma-informed practices, I am committed to creating supportive spaces for individuals to deepen their
relationship
with themselves and expand their capacity to engage with life.

Couples Counselling
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
