Through his warmth, humour, and genuine care, Dan helps people from traditionally marginalized populations and those who feel they have been forgotten about or left behind in some way. Dan’s interested in helping people stuck in grief – over the death of a loved one, a relationship ending, a change in the family dynamic, the loss of a pet or job. Trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship issues, LGBTIQ+ issues, conflict, shame, and self-esteem can interrupt our daily lives and prevent us from healing. Dan’s insight,

Life can be challenging and is often stressful. Multiple stress factors affects the quality of life and create psychological disorders. You may experience those challenges in a number of different ways: difficulties adjusting, confusion about direction and motivation in life, struggles at work, in relationships etc. As a result, you may feel anxious, depressed, angry or overwhelmed at times and need a better viewpoint to deal with those feelings and problems.

To help you, I use Mindfulness Based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, as well as providin a space to guide self discovery, self expression, and self compassion. Mindfulness helps us to not get overwhelmed by our distressing thoughts and physical sensations and CBT provides techniques that help changing of thoughts, reactions, and habits. It is my belief that therapy helps heal, strengthen, and or change a person’s relationship with their self, history, and environment. This change can entail adopting coping skills, increasing awareness of how we treat our selves, and management of our environment.

I believe that what happens to us is not as important as how we respond to what happens to us. Whatever it is that you are going through it can have meaning for you. Choosing to listen to your suffering and what it is trying to tell you can guide you back to authenticity and a life that is conscious and connected. I do not use techniques. The sessions are spontaneous and client centred. :

Taking the first step towards reaching out to a therapist can feel very overwhelming, so congratulations for taking that step today! The reasons for connecting with a therapist are varied and unique to the individual, as such my practice is to work to fully understand the concerns you are navigating, as you see them. In unpacking the concerns and the subsequent impact, we can work together to explore different ways of responding to the issues you're facing, be it a change of circumstance, or a change in how you feel about the circumstance. Together we can work towards creating a life that is more rich and meaningful on your terms.

Alcohol Use Counsellors

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
