To go against the grain is courage and it is courageous to be seeking support. I work with clients on a wide range of issues from depression, anxiety, and stress to trauma, grief, and addiction . I often have my dog, cat, and crested gecko present during session. I welcome clients' pets to session too! The commonality among all my clients is a love for animals, a connection to nature, and a desire to remove some splinters while working through life's difficult knots.

In the roles of mental health nurse, counsellor, educator, program developer, and lecturer (Uoft) I come to my private practice with 31 years of clinical experience working in the world of people suffering with mental health, trauma, grief and addiction issues.
Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Is it intolerable to be around people yet painful to be alone? Are you in awe of your own circumstances? If these are some of your thoughts and fears I am here to listen and help. We become powerless and hopeless with our perceived loss of choice. Reaching out can be the first step to untangle the myths that you have created about yourself, others and the world around you. Through sharing and finding a new voice, curiosity can be renewed and with that journey - hope. You no longer have to be held hostage by your feelings, actions, thoughts or relationships. Compassion is key.

I work with people who are feeling stuck either through the result of a recent event or due to long-standing issues that are now causing distress. Many of the people I work with struggle with anxiety, substance use concerns or have a history of trauma. Some of my clients are looking for short-term Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) interventions while others have tried brief therapy and are looking for longer term psychodynamically oriented treatment to make change at a deeper level. Sometimes people don't have clearly defined goals for treatment other than they want to feel better. That's okay.

My practice is fully virtual (video and phone calls) and can meet with anyone residing in Ontario and Quebec. I work with career-minded people who struggle with substance use, mood/anxiety concerns or ADHD. I work with people who are in high-pressure or creative fields who feel they can be doing better, but struggle to get there on their own. I strive to create a warm, collaborative space where you can explore concerns and learn tools to cope. I understand everyone is at a different place in their journey, and I’ll meet you where you’re at. I feel fortunate to have worked in many settings that uplift 2SLGBTQ+ and BIPOC populations.

I have worked in a clinical capacity since the year 2000, working in outpatient and residential settings for mental health and substance use issues.
I offer individual, couple, and family psychotherapy. My therapeutic stance is one of respect and active engagement. I like to explore resiliency, knowledge, aspirations and resources so you and I can have conversations that highlight what is going well while gently redirecting thinking and behavioural patterns that may be interfering with your capacity to feel connected to yourself and others. Whether this is solo or partnered endeavour, you will be able to gain clarity of your personal needs, develop self-compassion and acceptance, and uncover new bonding possibilities, and ways to maintain emotional connections.

Addiction Counsellors

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason, “interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
