In my practice, I strive to provide a safe and supportive environment in which my clients can work toward their goals. I employ evidence-based methods, meaning that I integrate current research findings with my clinical expertise to determine the most effective course of therapy. While my theoretical orientation is largely cognitive-behavioral (CBT), I also draw on solution-focussed, experiential, and humanistic approaches. My main areas of expertise include depression, anxiety problems, stress management, and anger management.

Everyone experiences emotional pain and may feel anxious or depressed at different times in life. During these times, it is comforting to know that someone is there to listen and hold your heart with care, kindness and sensitivity. Deciding to work with a psychotherapist and somatic practitioner is a courageous step towards understanding yourself and getting to the roots of what may be troubling you. I will see you, perhaps in ways that you've never been seen, and we will make sense of your patterns and struggles, and help you work through the layers of your life to see the beauty that exists within you.

I am a survivor of narcissistic abuse myself and have worked exclusively with narcissistic abuse clients for over 10 years.
If you are dealing with a Narcissist you're likely feeling confused, uncertain and exhausted. You've lost yourself and feel lonely in your relationship. You know something is off but you can't pinpoint it. And trying to explain it to others is difficult. If this rings true to you, chances are you've become the target of a "narcissist", a personality impaired/disordered individual. Take a DEEP breath! I truly understand what you've experienced - a life-shattering, soul crushing, emotionally bewildering time with this person. You don't need long term therapy, you just need the right therapy and it must include trauma healing.

Borderline, Narcissistic, and Avoidant Personality Disorders (BPD, NPD, and APD), complex trauma, autism, and undiagnosed ADHD can lead to insomnia, addictions, anger issues, major depression, and crippling social anxiety.
You're hurting. Despite the brave front, you're wondering if anyone really sees you, hears you, or understands you. In moments of deep honesty, you admit to yourself that you've been feeling this way for a long, long time. A friend of yours, a family member, maybe even your partner has told you that "You could use some help." You've googled your symptoms and downloaded apps, but you're really not sure what's going on with you. You've even tried therapy before, but it only seemed to scratch the surface. You're not alone, believe me: you sound like most of my clients.

I specialize in narcissistic abuse, grief/loss, emotionally focused therapy, attachment trauma, and perfectionism.
We teach people how to treat us. If we don’t know how to love ourselves, to accept ourselves, to be compassionate with ourselves, how can we expect others to? If you struggle with issues such as people pleasing, guilt, shame, having high expectations of yourself but have low expectations of others then you have placed others’ needs over your own. If you have a hard time saying no because you worry that others will not like you or want to spend time with you, then working on boundaries assists you with experiencing clearer expectations of yourself and others. Work towards a healthier you.

Growing up with a narcissistic father led me to believe that love was conditional and I repeated the cycle of toxic relationships until I eventually got help.
You’re not crazy for wanting to make sense of it. You’ve watched the videos, “how do I know if I’m in a relationship with a narcissist?” and you’re feeling isolated, embarrassed, confused. They’re talking about your actual life, but you don’t think you’re strong enough to leave. You’ve rationalized, communicated, begged. Maybe they’ll change, but they’re not the problem. You’re the one that needs to change. They say this, so it must be true, right? I need you to know that you’re not stupid or weak for staying. I was once in an abusive relationship with a narcissist, entangled in the chaos, and I doubted my strength to leave.

I get it, therapy can seem scary. Sharing your deepest darkest secrets with a stranger? No thank you! As a therapist who attends therapy regularly, (and has for quite some time), I truly understand how daunting this process can feel. Taking that first step might feel like the scariest thing in the world, but I am committed to making your journey a safe and supportive one. You won’t leave feeling unsure about what you've shared or questioning whether you said too much. My goal is to create a space where you can feel completely comfortable and heard.

I am also a strong advocate for Domestic Violence and Narcissistic Abuse Awareness and work with many clients who have experienced both.
She:kon/Hello! My name is Jenny Patterson and I am the founder of Bear in Mind Healing, a private practice based in Cobourg, Ontario. I believe that Mother Earth is a garden and we are the flowers (her children) and that part of my purpose is to help those flowers grow. One of the reasons why I love being a social worker and what drives me to do this work is my own lived experiences. What I find beautiful is being able to walk with folks on their healing journey for just a little while; creating that safe, nurturing space and connection.

Narcissistic Personality (NPD) Counsellors

What type of therapy is best for narcissistic personality disorder?

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is best treated with talk therapy, which could involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, gestalt therapy, or similar approaches. A therapist will help a patient uncover the feelings that may drive their behavior and discover how to engage with themselves and those around them with greater empathy and understanding, fewer demands, and less defensiveness, with the goal of developing a more authentic sense of self that enables healthier relationships.

How do therapists treat NPD?

By developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and continually focusing patients on relationships, community, and connection, a therapist, through talk therapy, may be able to help someone with NPD change. In sessions, a therapist will help an individual achieve relief from their current stressors, including the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression. A therapist may also help an individual to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms, learn new ways of interacting with others, and eventually become able to feel and display empathy.

Can a narcissist be cured with therapy?

Therapy can be effective. After a serious setback or great loss, someone with NPD may be forced to recognize that they are not immune to life’s challenges. That can spur feelings of melancholy and depression that lead them to seek professional help. Once an individual decides to seek help, they have already taken a step that the majority of those with NPD never will. Still, people with NPD often quit therapy as they naturally resist feeling vulnerable, being challenged, or admitting to flaws.

How can you get narcissistic personality disorder treatment for someone?

It is notoriously difficult to convince someone with NPD to seek help. With their feelings of superiority, they may be unlikely to recognize or acknowledge that they have a problem, or that their problem is narcissism. Sometimes, they are aware that they are arrogant and that others resent them but they don’t see it as a problem because they are convinced of their superiority. People with NPD have trouble maintaining relationships, but family members and others who do feel close to them, and whose presence they value, may be able to encourage them to seek therapy.
