Becoming a parent can stir up a lot of emotions you didn’t expect like anxiety or worry that feels overwhelming, sadness that weighs heavily, or guilt for not “enjoying every moment.” Maybe you’re lying awake replaying the day, or finding it hard to connect with yourself, your partner, or your baby. Maybe you're struggling with the loss of identity that comes with the new chapter and new role of being a parent. These struggles are common, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with them. You don’t need to keep telling yourself “it’ll get better after…” because things can begin to feel better now, with the right support.

Things seem pretty awful right now, and you're wondering if you'll ever feel "okay". You're looking for someone who can listen without judgement, help you learn new coping skills, and create a plan to feel better. I believe that every person lives a life with unique challenges and that providing personalized care requires unique solutions. A "cookie cutter" approach simply won't work - instead, we will get to know one-another, and create a plan to help you feel better together. You deserve to be seen as an individual with a unique therapeutic approach that fits who you are, and who you want to be.

Whether you’re carrying past mistakes, feeling uncertain about the future, or worried about what others might think, I want to work alongside you. Together, we can process the pain and weight of shame, fear, or doubt. Believing in yourself in who you truly are, can sometimes feel like the hardest thing to do. Our past, the judgments of others, or even our own expectations can drown out that belief. These struggles can show up in many ways: depression, anxiety, anger, rehearsing traumatic events, or relationship challenges.

For example, I use solution focused techniques, mindfulness, somatic work and others.
Perhaps you are wondering if you have the strength, resources, or ability to navigate your challenging situation or relationship. Perhaps you feel stuck in negative patterns of thinking or acting. Perhaps you are struggling with depression, anxiety, or emotional distress. Perhaps you have experienced trauma, either recently or in your past, and you notice the impact it still has on you today. It is helpful to be aware of how our past experiences and relationships help to create patterns, some positive and some that indicate areas where we need to grow. Whatever your reason for seeking counselling, I applaud you for taking this step.

Do you feel like the demands of your work are consuming so much energy that you have little left for yourself or your relationships? Burnout can leave you questioning your confidence, your decisions, and even your sense of identity. You might look like you’re holding it all together on the outside, but inside, you’re running on fumes. Burnout and stress don't just drain your energy at work; it steals from your relationships and your health.

Every morning we start a new day aiming to be safe, happy, and fulfilled, with a sense of belonging. We know that life plays by its own rules, so we do the best we can with the knowledge, skills, and resources at hand. Some days turn out better than others. Because you are here, you probably have decided it's time to "cross that bridge", whatever that means in your life. Maybe you have reached a place with no bridge in sight. I'm here to help!

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
