Mental Health, Substance Use, and relationship difficulties are often invisible and therefore can be hard to know what needs to change to make things better.
Happiness and wellbeing are still possible in times of intense difficulty and stress. Psychotherapy can help us shift from the thought "I do not know how to cope or manage" to "I got this, even though it is difficult". Stresses such as illness, family, work, or relationships can lead to crippling life experiences. You may begin to wonder "Will things ever change"? Kirana Psychotherapy has over 25 years of experience helping people understand how to grow even in difficult times.

The main issues I work with are couples, trauma and substance use/abuse.
Accepting New Clients-Your life looks great on the outside. You have all the things that should make you happy but you don’t feel that way. You may be struggling with anxiety, unresolved past trauma, or relationship dissatisfaction. Maybe you've been using substances more than usual to cope with feeling overwhelmed, either on edge or just completely disconnected like you’re running on autopilot. You’re used to handling your own problems so it can be hard to ask for help. Other people don’t understand, they think you are fine.

I work with teens and adults experiencing trauma and complex PTSD, substance use and addiction, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, and relationship difficulties.
Many of the people I work with appear high-functioning on the outside while privately struggling with trauma, addiction, anxiety, burnout, or emotional overwhelm. Often, these visible struggles are only the tip of the iceberg. Beneath the surface are deeper experiences such as unresolved pain, shame, emotional neglect, trauma, or years spent in survival mode. Many clients feel disconnected from themselves, stuck in painful patterns, or exhausted from constantly trying to hold everything together. Therapy offers a space to slow down, feel understood, and begin healing beneath the surface.

You might be functioning on the outside, but underneath something does not feel right. The people I work with are often thoughtful and self aware; but stuck in patterns they cannot seem to shift. They come in feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or worn down from carrying so much alone, often cut off from their own sense of aliveness. Together, we slow things down and make sense of what is happening beneath the surface so something can begin to move. Not by fixing you, because you are not broken, but by understanding you and helping you support yourself with more clarity, ease, and choice.

Challenges with substance use is a spectrum.
For over 12 years I have supported those who have experienced: challenges with substances, addiction, navigating someone else's addiction, effects of childhood trauma, anxiety, grief, and supporting folks in the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Together, we’ll explore not only ways to cope, but how to gently shift the underlying patterns that are keeping you stuck.

I am a Venezuelan-Canadian queer woman of colour with lived experience of migration and I offer services in Spanish and English. I work from an evolving feminist, anti-oppression, sex-positive and poly-affirming framework. Gently and bravely understanding and unpacking the impacts of systemic and colonial structures on the constructs of identity and mental health is crucial for the work we will do together.   Creativity, curiosity and compassionate care are at the core of my practice. When journeying through difficult experiences, art becomes a powerful friend for the courageous path of healing and transformation.

I work with adults whose substance use is tied to trauma, depression, emotional highs and lows, or feeling overwhelmed fast and often.
Hi, I’m Mandy. If substances or addictive patterns have started to take up more space in your life than you want, therapy can help you slow things down and understand what is really going on underneath. Addiction often becomes a way to cope with overwhelming emotions, trauma, stress, or intense shifts in mood, like feeling deeply depressed, emotionally all over the place, shut down, agitated, or hard to settle. It can bring relief for a moment, but over time it often adds shame, conflict, isolation, and a sense of losing control.

My social work journey began while I was in prison working on the Peer Support Team doing crisis intervention work. While incarcerated, I completed a Women's Studies Degree and upon release I received a Diploma as an Assaulted Women's and Children's Counsellor/Advocate. I went on to complete my Master of Social Work. For over ten years I have been doing community work, harm reduction and therapy with marginalized communities, people who have faced systemic oppression, those who have been incarcerated and their families, people who do sex work, use drugs and struggle with mental health including depression and anxiety.

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
