Life doesn’t always unfold the way we imagined. Sometimes it is the ending of a love relationship, an unexpected job loss, or navigating a new health diagnosis. These moments can have us feeling anxious, disconnected, and unsure of how to move forward. Counselling is a supportive space to clear the noise. My role as your therapist is to support you in connecting to your core values, releasing the negative self-talk or shame that is weighing you down, and providing evidence based tools to aid your healing. I am passionate about supporting individuals through life transitions and loss.

Life is full of challenges, and by overcoming these challenges we can learn, grow, and discover things about ourselves, others, and the world around us. Sometimes though, these challenges become too much to handle. Perhaps we’ve experienced a loss, a major change, or a trauma, something that has taken away the sense of control over our lives and we find ourselves stuck and overwhelmed, no longer able to learn from life’s challenges, but feeling helpless to overcome them. For many of us, this sense of overwhelm leads to symptoms of depression and anxiety.

We each have an incredible capacity for growth, healing, and transformation. While life's challenges can leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain about the future, it can be helpful to view these experiences not as permanent conditions, but as opportunities to better understand ourselves and create meaningful change. My approach is grounded in the belief that growth happens when we engage the whole person (mind, body, emotions, relationships, values, and environment), rather than focusing solely on symptoms. I work collaboratively with clients to explore patterns, experiences, and strengths that shape their lives.

I am an experienced therapist with 36 years of practice to draw upon. I will listen carefully as you describe the issues that you need support and help to sort out. Often, an increased understanding of the challenges that you face can be very helpful to move forward in your life. As well, learning some new skills to manage the issues and/or gaining a new perspective on the issues can be useful as well. I appreciate that it is not easy to embark on a therapy course so I make every effort to be supportive and understanding as we build a therapy relationship.

Seniors come to explore end of life issues and ease the sorrows and regrets that come with a life long-lived.
Some clients want an active approach: Goal setting/developing strategies to overcome challenges to change. I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) schema for this work. Others want less structure: To reflect on their lives and chart new courses of action. I actively listen and provide gentle clinical support and guidance during this work together.

FAQ - About Therapy for Elders
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counselling for elderly different from counselling for other age groups?
In general, counselling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialise in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counselling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counsellors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counsellors specialising in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counsellors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
