I offer counselling and psychotherapy for individuals, couples and families. I work with clients to improve their resiliency and help to uncover their strengths. I use different modalities to meet the individual's needs. I use a client-centred approach that gives the client the ability to drive the sessions' goals. I help clients connect the dots between patterns that were established in their childhood and its manifestations in adult life. This aids in understanding the connection between the two and enables an exploration of ways to alter them.

It takes courage to initiate counseling and therapy. Working with the mind and our thought processes takes curiosity, patience, and understanding. However, it is so important to not only address our thought processes but to also look at the environments we were in that helped shape the way we see ourselves. Our experiences, relationships, and connections impact our overall well being. I take great pride in you sharing that process with me so that you can achieve learning, healing, growing, and a sense of self-acceptance and love. I too have done this personal work and understand the challenges it brings but also the rewards.

Taking the first step toward self-care and healing can be intimidating! I understand, empathize, and welcome you to share your story within a safe, accepting, and non-judgemental space. Life has many challenges which leave some of us feeling overwhelmed. This can provoke anxiety and we may not know where to look for answers. Deciding to let someone into your innermost self takes courage. You need someone who is empathetic, caring, trustworthy, and non-judgemental; someone who will walk beside you, helping you re-discover your strengths and self-worth. And then change will slowly but surely begin. I believe humans are resilient. I believe everyone has the capability to change and should not suffer alone. If you are in difficulty, let us explore together how to transform your emotional turmoil into self-efficacy.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Counsellors
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.
Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.
How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
