In a time of so much
illness
, injustice, and natural, social and political upheaval, how do you find meaning in life, and in your life? Can you create meaning out of the unwanted, the new, or the unknown, as in the time after Covid? Or do you face all too familiar patterns: recent or long-term health issues or diagnoses; employment challenges or family conflict; effects from trauma, dislocation, or isolation; core or changing identity issues; aging, end of life, loss or bereavement? Are you providing care for others through your work or for your own family? What is the story of your life, and what will you now make of it?

I have provided treatment for adults, focusing on anxiety disorders, trauma, depression,
chronic pain
and adjustment difficulties; particularly those involving work.
I help people get Unstuck from the internal and external struggles that keep us from living fully, now. We humans suffer, not only because of the inevitable
pain
that life presents, but because of the difficult emotions, thoughts, memories, urges and sensations we experience in response to the
pain
. We humans are also incredibly adaptive, with the ability to demonstrate tremendous courage, compassion and resiliency that allows us to overcome and grow from adversity and difficult personal histories. My approach is client-centered, collaborative, solution-focused, and grounded in evidence-based science.

I have extensive experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds who are navigating life with anxiety, low mood, relationship issues, ongoing dilemmas, grief and/or chronic
illness
.
Encountering issues, no matter the severity, is a normal and natural part of our lives. However, it is my belief that our unique life experiences require a personalized approach to help us reach our goals in the face of adversity. One size does not fit all. Sessions with me are experiential in nature, with a focus on developing present moment awareness of one’s inner and outer world. Every person possesses an expert knowledge of themselves. Through the cultivation of mindfulness and other skills, I aim to help individuals harness that self knowledge to identify where they are stuck and to find ways to engage in values-based living.

In life, we get many chances to rewrite our stories. Healing can be found when we connect with our true nature; when we unite with the parts of us that we have disconnected from because of stress, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, anger, chronic
illness
, disability, shame, or guilt. I see my role as creating a container to support you in developing a deeper relationship with yourself, your community, and your greater environment.

How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
