addiction
/compulsive behaviours, separation/divorce, family conflicts, marital dissatisfaction, sexuality, infidelity, marriage preparation and much more.
My mission is to walk with you as you take steps to address your personal and relationship concerns, challenges, and problems. I provide professional counselling and therapy to individuals, couples, and families in order to help you live healthy and fulfilled lives. My work in addictions includes working with
substance
or behavioural addictions.
As a therapist I aim to provide a safe and supportive environment where you can discuss personal and sensitive issues. I will work collaboratively with you to help you find the solutions that are best for you. Through psychotherapy you can explore negative emotions, gain insight to problematic thoughts and behaviours and learn healthy coping strategies that will help to rebuild your self confidence. If you are feeling depressed, anxious, stressed or overwhelmed therapy can help you overcome these feelings. If you are struggling in your relationships, therapy can help you create more satisfying and meaningful relationships.

By taking an active role in your life, and talking to a therapist, you are investing in yourself, your relationship, and your family. Clients will be provided with a safe space to reflect on, and process presenting issues and behaviours that may be affecting life. I also help my clients conceptualize one's
substance
use and personality disorders as a way learned way to survive.
I always approach my clients in with an anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, harm reduction framework. What does that mean? It means that I will always ask "what happened to you?" instead of asking "what's wrong with you?". It also means that I will always respect you as the expert in your own life. Finally, it means that I believe that everyone does their very best to survive and thrive each day–even on the days that we can't see any hope. I am here to be with you, even through the darkest of days, and help you find inspiration and hope within yourself.

I have had the honour of working with youth, older adults, those living with the challenges of
addiction
and major mental illness among other challenges.
Throughout life's journey we all face challenges of some sort. We all have our own stories and experiences that contribute to who we are and how we face adversity. When those difficulties feel like they are too overwhelming to manage, its OK to reach out for help. Whether you are feeling like life is too much, dealing with addictions issues, or are challenged with a diagnosis of a mental illness. Every person that I have the honour of traveling with on their journey has the ability to face the struggles ahead of them.

I work most often with individuals and couples experiencing issues related to anxiety, depression, grief and loss, domestic violence, PTSD, relationship related problems, ineffective communication, and
substance
use and misuse.
Welcome! My name is Alexis Thornton-Cronin and I have over ten years of experience providing support to families, children, and couples. I hold a Master’s of Science in Psychology, and an Undergraduate Honours degree in Psychology and Psychological Research. During the completion of my Master’s degree, I studied the relationship between securely attached children and their parent’s relationship, igniting my passion for working with couples. I am passionate about providing psychoeducation to clients, finding creative interventions to strengthen therapeutic rapport, and nurturing re-connection and understanding among couples.

What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason, “interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
