If you feel lost, stuck, or like your world is crumbling around you, you are not alone. Most people experience this when facing significant life changes. An aching feeling and a deep sadness accompany lost hopes and dreams. Times like this call into question, "Who am I?" Your identity feels like it has been swallowed up by the days and years spent tending to life's demands. This makes trying to figure out your next steps both overwhelming and terrifying. You want to feel on solid ground again and for your life to have purpose, meaning, and genuine connections to others.

Does it feel like you haven’t been yourself lately? Do you have a hard time saying ‘no’ to others? Are you struggling to create the change you want, but not sure where (or how) to start? Are things from your past keeping you ‘stuck’, and you want to reclaim your life? We all have had things happen to us or have things about ourselves that we wish we could change. Sometimes, we develop thinking or behavioural patterns that helped us through hard times, but you may be noticing these thoughts or behaviours no longer benefit you in the same way they used to. Often we aren’t even aware of what cycles we are stuck in!

People see you as the one who has it all together, but deep down you feel like something is missing, you have feelings of shame and thoughts like "I'm not good enough". You're tired, over-worked, overwhelmed and anxious much of the time. Putting up this facade is taking a toll on your emotional health. Constantly striving to do it all is exhausting and not fulfilling for you.

Virtual, Phone, and In Person sessions available (in person in Niagara Falls). Sometimes things can feel overwhelming. We can lose focus, motivation, or feel lost. That is okay, and absolutely normal. Having a supportive and safe space to express yourself, without fear of judgement can be beneficial. Identifying your goals, barriers, and your priorities can help organize your thoughts and start the path to healing. It can be tough to look forward when you are feeling stuck in one spot. Recognizing and reminding you of your strengths can be empowering. It can be hard to ask for help, so congratulations on taking the first step.

No matter where we are in life, we are vulnerable to experiencing overwhelming and unexpected challenges. Many of us, have moved through life without learning how to manage these difficult emotions in an adaptive and helpful way. As a result, we are prevented from connecting to our true emotional world and reject some of the core parts of ourselves. Left unacknowledged, these parts of ourselves can influence our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and keep us stuck repeating old, unfulfilling patterns.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
