Making the decision to disclose difficulties and seek out psychological services can be challenging. I work collaboratively with adult and
adolescent
therapy clients to develop a clear understanding of problems, building agreement on the core tasks of therapy to lead to meaningful changes. I utilize my training in Emotion-Focused, Cognitive-Behavioural, Psychodynamic, and Integrative therapies to address a diverse range of presenting concerns, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, trauma (eg. sexual assault, childhood abuse), and personality difficulties. The foundation of our relationship will be our focus on establishing and maintaining a strong working-alliance rooted in empathy and trust.

As a psychotherapist specializing in parenting issues, I understand how stressful it can be when, despite your best efforts, you continue to have challenges with your child's behavior. In my practice, I work mainly with children, youth and their families. I offer individual therapy for children/youth who struggle with issues like self-esteem, anxiety, depression, bullying, emotional regulation and parent-
teen
conflict. Parent sessions are recommended along side the child's therapy. In certain situations, I provide parent coaching for those who want to reflect upon themselves and develop better parenting strategies. For those seeking individual and family therapy, my hope is to offer a space where each person can talk without shame and begin to compose the life they desire.

Career/Mental Health/Hypnotherapy ..... As a culturally competent counsellor, I have an understanding of the cultural nuances that influence the Black/BIPOC community in the GTA. Whether it's personal, intercultural, intergenerational, workplace/educational discrimination, systemic barriers or micro-aggressions ... These things will affect how you view yourself and your place in our society. While the majority of my clients are from the African diaspora, I’m happy to meet with anyone who wants to share their story with me and welcome me as a supportive member of your village.

When we avoid what we need to face, we suffer the symptoms that bring us to therapy. We are wired to bear the pain of real life, but our psychological suffering can be unboreable. Sigmund Freud called psychotherapy “a cure through love” and I truly believe in this. The wounds that accrued in a relationship must be healed in a relationship. A relationship where the therapist doesn’t talk “at us” but “with us.” I believe all individuals can develop into mature, fully realized adults. However, inner or outer obstacles can make this path difficult. My role has always been to support my clients to remove these obstacles.

You might be struggling with your relationships, current events or life experiences. You might be feeling a ‘stuckness’ in ways of thinking and behaving or your sense of yourself. Therapy offers a process to find new awareness and understanding, new ways to cope, clarify and resolve difficulties, and change and grow in meaningful ways. Various difficulties bring people to therapy. Some are dilemmas in personal, family and professional relationships. Some are anxiety, depression, and troubling internal conflicts. People can feel low self-esteem, a sense of inauthenticity and purposelessness.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
