Life can be so difficult to navigate when you’re struggling! When we’re not feeling our best, even the smallest tasks or interactions in life, work, parenting or relationships can feel daunting, heavy and hard. Anxiety, anger, burnout, unmanaged ADHD or OCD and low self-confidence can feel as though they’re keeping you from living the life you want to live. You know you want to feel more calm, content, comfortable and confident as you manage decisions, interactions and relationships, but you’re not sure how to get there. The good news is that you’re in the right place, taking the first step, right now.

One million Canadian men suffer from major depressive disorder each year. Three of every four completed suicides in Canada are by men. The prevalence of alcohol use disorder is twice as high in men with another mental health diagnosis than in the general population. One third of Canadian men worry that talking about mental health at work could put their job at risk. Men are just as likely as women to have mental health issues yet are far less likely to utilize traditional mental health services. Men are more likely to believe that mental health services are difficult to access, ineffective and invasive. At Cogent, Ontario’s new mental health clinic focussed solely on supporting men, we’re changing that.

Do you find yourself constantly putting other people's needs before your own? Struggling with boundaries, self-doubt, anxiety, or relationships that leave you feeling unseen, exhausted, or not quite good enough? Many of the people I work with grew up learning to keep the peace, care for others, and ignore their own needs. As adults, this can show up as people-pleasing, fear of conflict, difficulty trusting themselves, hyper-independence, relationship struggles, and feeling responsible for everyone else's emotions.

Sometimes life becomes heavier than expected. There are moments when something feels off, even when you cannot fully explain why. You may feel overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, disconnected from yourself, or uncertain about what comes next. Perhaps you have been showing up for work, family, relationships, and responsibilities while quietly carrying more than others realize, or noticing patterns that no longer feel right for you. Whatever brings you here, your experience deserves space, attention, and care.

Hi, I’m Becca. If you’re here, you might feel like you’re stuck in the mud of life— caught between feeling like you’re “too much” or “not enough”. Whether you’re struggling in your relationships, navigating life transitions, facing loss, or working through big feelings like fear, anger, and shame, I’m here to meet you where you are. That’s where I come in. For me, being a therapist means sitting in the mud with you, wading into the messiness together, and working with you toward a place where you can begin to listen to and trust yourself.

I help couples break free from conflict patterns, improve communication, and reconnect with the closeness that first brought them together.
I also work with individuals facing anxiety, depression, trauma, and work-related stress. My approach is trauma-informed and client-centered, often drawing on Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help people heal the parts of themselves that carry pain or keep them feeling stuck.

I can provide counselling and psychotherapy to individuals (16 years & older) and couples.
When we are unable to honour our true selves or make sense of our experiences this can create a high degree of distress and discomfort. This can be caused by a number of different life events such as trauma, abuse & other developmental or situational life changes. In my practice I support my clients in exploring the impact of these events & work towards creating a vision of their future; one in which they feel safe, grounded and can flourish. I have strong knowledge of attachment theory, trauma informed as well as grief and loss practice, & work from a strength based perspective in order to foster growth & resilience.

FAQ - Marriage Counselling
What issues does marriage counselling help with?
Marriage counselling can address common relationship concerns, including ongoing conflict, communication challenges, emotional distance, or difficulty making decisions together. It may also be helpful for couples who are not currently experiencing major problems but want to prepare for future life changes. For more specific concerns affecting one individual in the relationship, such as trauma, depression, or significant substance use concerns, individual therapy may be more appropriate than marriage counselling.

When is the right time to start marriage counselling?
There is no single “right” time to start marriage counselling, but certain signs may suggest that counselling could be helpful. For example, a couple may benefit from counselling if many conversations end in conflict, if negative interactions are becoming more frequent, or if relationship stress is affecting other areas of life, such as sleep, work, parenting, or friendships. Some couples also seek counselling proactively. Premarital counselling, for instance, allows couples to discuss communication styles, finances, family dynamics, and future goals before getting married. Other couples may start counselling before a major life change, such as becoming parents, relocating, or navigating a stressful career transition.

Is marriage counselling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Marriage counselling may still help even if one partner is more hesitant to attend, as long as both people are ultimately willing to participate in sessions. Once counselling is underway, the more hesitant partner may become more open to sessions that can strengthen the relationship and build coping skills and communication strategies. If one partner refuses to attend, individual therapy may still help the other partner understand their needs, set boundaries, and decide how to approach the relationship.

Is online marriage counselling as effective as in-person?
There are differing opinions on the best format for marriage counselling. While some studies show that online marriage counselling can be as effective as in-person counselling, some argue that in-person counselling is more effective because it allows the therapist to better pick up on context and body language cues. In addition, in-person counselling may be a better fit for couples who are working through high-conflict issues. Ultimately, the “best” format depends on the couple’s specific needs and concerns.

What is faith-based marriage counselling and how is it different?
Faith-based marriage counselling incorporates a couple’s religious or spiritual beliefs into counselling. It may be a good fit for couples who want to discuss their relationship, values, and marriage within the context of their faith. For example, Christian marriage counselling may appeal to couples who want a counsellor familiar with Christian beliefs about marriage. Other forms of faith-based counselling may incorporate Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, or other religious perspectives into sessions.

How much does marriage counselling cost and is it covered by insurance?
Marriage counselling often costs CAD $150 to $250 or more per session, depending on location, therapist experience, session length, and practice setting. Many clients pay out of pocket, although some private or employer-sponsored extended health benefits may cover part of the cost. Lower-cost options may be available through sliding scale fees, which adjust the cost of counselling based on your income or financial circumstances, and community clinics, which may offer reduced-cost services through nonprofit organizations or publicly funded programs.
