The remaining piece of my practice focuses on anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, phobias, panic disorder, and agoraphobia), trauma, substance use, and ADHD.
When working with OCD and some anxiety disorders, Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) has been clinically proven to be the gold standard treatment approach. I also incorporate various other therapeutic modalities based on your needs. Together, we'll identify what is most distressing to you and develop a personalized plan to help you move forward.

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist I work alongside clients who are seeking deeper self-understanding and insight into their unconscious patterns and relational dynamics. With awareness, clients start to see the patterns that shape their experiences. They come to understand the emotional currents beneath their reactions and, in that understanding, begin to choose their responses with greater intention and self-compassion. I tailor my approach to each client and work psychodynamically, always holding the wholeness of our lives in how we navigate present challenges.

Mental Health, Substance Use, and relationship difficulties are often invisible and therefore can be hard to know what needs to change to make things better.
Happiness and wellbeing are still possible in times of intense difficulty and stress. Psychotherapy can help us shift from the thought "I do not know how to cope or manage" to "I got this, even though it is difficult". Stresses such as illness, family, work, or relationships can lead to crippling life experiences. You may begin to wonder "Will things ever change"? Kirana Psychotherapy has over 25 years of experience helping people understand how to grow even in difficult times.

Clients with substance use, mental health concerns, difficulty with managing every day stressors & making changes needed to get back on track and find life worth living again are my specialty.
You’re stuck in a spiral of self-doubt, and finding a way out feels exhausting. You remember a time when figuring out how to move forward didn’t feel so complicated, but the life you knew feels like a distant past and the future no longer feels so clear. You’ve held it together for so long, but you’re tired of feeling pulled in a million different directions. You’re ready to feel like your hard work has finally paid off. I help people just like you, ones who have it within them to feel hopeful and grounded again, but just need the support to get there.

I continue to support those suffering from a number of mental health struggles, especially those who have turned to substance use to relieve those symptoms.
Are you sick and tired of feeling sick and tired? Tired of the hiding and secrecy that surround your drinking. Even if you present well and have been able to manage your professional career, does self doubt or strong emotions have you turning to alcohol for a feeling of relief that is only short lived and leaves you worse off than before? Alcohol has become ubiquitous as a stress reliever in society but often leaves even worse scars and brings risk of unhealthy or unsafe behaviours, relationship ruptures and general suffering.

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
