At transitional times in women's lives, the experience of overwhelm (feeling on-edge much of the time, difficulty thinking as clearly as usual, frustration with ourselves and others) can play a significant factor in our mental health and well-being. On top of becoming a new parent or experiencing a change in our health or family, we find it hard to lean on our usual coping skills or find meaningful comfort in our go-to methods of self-soothing and self-care. My counselling work begins with understanding stress responses and the nervous system to pave a pathway ahead in your new life journey.

When facing difficulties in managing stress or emotions, feeling stuck, experiencing major changes, struggling in relationships, or seeking more personal growth, engaging in psychotherapy could be quite helpful. What at first might seem so simple - to have an opportunity to feel really heard and understood, in a welcoming and non-judgmental way - results in a franker, freer communication and can facilitate the reactivation of your natural tendency to develop towards a healthier way of being. It can contribute to greater self-awareness, the development of new ways of expression, leading to stronger self an improved relationships.

FAQ - About In Person Therapy
What are the benefits of in-person therapy?
In-person therapy offers several benefits that some people find highly valuable for their mental health treatment. Being present in the same room as your therapist can create a stronger sense of connection and allow for more nuanced communication through body language. Some people may also find it easier to focus in therapy when they are in a dedicated space and away from potential distractions related to home or work; attending an in-person session provides a clear boundary between therapy time and the rest of your life. For certain therapeutic approaches, such as Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), exposure therapy, or somatic therapy, being in person may be particularly important, as these therapies benefit from the therapist being able to observe and respond to a client’s physical cues effectively. Additionally, some individuals simply feel more comfortable discussing sensitive or painful topics when they are face-to-face with their therapist rather than on a screen.
When should I choose in-person therapy over online therapy?
In-person therapy may be a better choice when you need a structured therapeutic environment separate from your daily life, when you find it difficult to focus or feel comfortable in an online setting, or when privacy at home is a concern. It may also be more appropriate if you are dealing with severe mental health symptoms that require close monitoring or if your therapy involves approaches that rely heavily on observing physical cues. On the other hand, if convenience, scheduling flexibility, or access to specialists outside your immediate area are priorities, online therapy may be a better fit. Many therapists offer both options, so you can also discuss with a provider which format might work best for your specific situation.
How do I find an in-person therapist?
You can use Psychology Today's therapist directory to find an in-person therapist in your area. You can search by location, insurance accepted, specialty areas, therapeutic approaches, and other criteria to narrow down providers who meet your needs. Each therapist profile includes information about their credentials, areas of expertise, and whether they offer in-person sessions. Once you have identified potential therapists, you can contact them directly through the directory to schedule an initial consultation and determine whether they are a good fit before committing to ongoing treatment. When reaching out, it can be helpful to confirm their availability for in-person appointments, their office location, and whether they accept your insurance.
