Starting therapy can be nerve-racking and overwhelming. Often times, people don’t know what to expect or if a therapist will be able to help them with their challenges. I utilize an eclectic and individualistic approach throughout the therapeutic process to accommodate each client’s unique experience, needs, and goals for therapy. I strive to create a safe, welcoming, and comfortable environment and value the importance of the therapeutic relationship so you can move forward with ease. It is important to me that you feel heard and validated in your experiences and to foster hope in healing on your journey.

My journey in the therapy field began in the public sector providing addiction counselling to adults and youth. Through my work as an addiction counsellor, I developed an understanding of trauma and developed a passion for helping people heal and grow mentally, emotionally, and physically. I know therapy can be difficult. My objective is to provide an environment that makes you feel safe and comfortable. I take a client-centered approach to meet you where you are by incorporating a variety of different approaches to tailor treatment to your individual needs.

Are you feeling overwhelmed? Do your thoughts keep racing from one thing to another? Do you find you are excellent at taking care of everyone else but keep neglecting yourself? I would like to help. I am passionate about helping people to move past the "shoulds" and move towards creating the kind of life they want to live. Most of the time when we are distressed we are worrying either too much about the past or the future, or are overly preoccupied by what we imagine other people are thinking about us.

Psychotherapy is my second career, and that makes me stronger as a therapist. That's because, in addition to my academic qualifications and clinical training, my own lived experiences as a daughter, a wife and mother, a student, an employee and an entrepreneur help me relate to my clients in so many meaningful ways. Clients relate to my sense of humour, empathy, and desire for growth as a person and as a therapist. And they value my ability to get to the root of the issue and expertise in both practical problem-solving and supporting clients' growth.

As a therapist, I can help guide you through processing your thoughts and emotions, and to reconnect with your inner strengths and empowerment. My approach is person-centred, strengths-based, collaborative, and anti-oppressive.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
