I have training and experience working with people navigating difficult life transitions, living through grief, healing from abuse and trauma, and coping with depression, anxiety, and sleep issues.
Each one of us deserves a relationship in which we feel deeply heard with warmth and compassion.  I hold respect for the stories and journeys of people’s lives and understand that life events, relational difficulties, or mental health concerns can significantly impact our ability to feel steady, connected, and whole. It is my hope that through focused and purposeful conversations, the people that I work with can move towards lasting and meaningful change in their lives and find their way.

I specialise in helping individuals 18 and older, dealing with anxiety disorders, stress management, work burnout, depression, post-partum depression/anxiety, phobias and fears, insomnia and cancer and chronic illness.
Hello! My name is Karinna Nájera, Psychotherapist, Counsellor and Clinical Hypnotherapist. I have worked in the Mental Health filed since 1996 and practiced Clinical Hypnosis since 2008. Often past negative events or traumas have a deep impact in our lives. --When left unresolved, these events influence our daily lives as much as the positive events we've experienced. In Martin Seligman's words: "Curing the negatives does not produce the positives".

In our culture, we often think of experiences or symptoms like anxiety, stress, insomnia etc. as problems to be fixed or gotten rid of. What if they were more like signs, signals, or guideposts trying to tell us what was off balance or that we were heading off our course in our lives? If this resonates with you, and you would to get unstuck and move forward in your life, email is the best way to reach me.

“In the autumnal events of my own experience, I am easily fixated on surface appearances – on the decline of meaning, the decay of relationships, the death of work. And yet if I look more deeply, I may see the myriad of possibilities being planted to bear fruit in some season yet to come.” -Parker Palmer. It takes courage to reach out for help. I’m here to help you find healing in the place you are right now. Together, we will engage in self-exploration, and my goal is to provide a safe, compassionate, and warm space to learn, develop, and achieve your goals. We will work on exploring your resiliency and building skills to cope.

The stressors we experience can significantly impact us. You may feel anxious, have obsessive thoughts, and can’t seem to move past things. You may become overwhelmed, have difficulty concentrating or staying organized, feel moody, or have sleep issues. You might also struggle with school, work, or relationships. Coping and figuring out how to manage can sometimes be difficult. In therapy, we can aim to develop strategies to make things easier for you. We can work together to identify what is holding you back and impacting you in order to resolve it and no longer experience it the same way. I work with teenagers, students, & adults.

You know what to do: Worry less. Sleep more. Respond, not react. Be self-disciplined. Control your temper. Say ‘no’ more. Take better care of yourself. And you would do them too, if only your job weren’t so stressful, day-to-day life was easier, someone would help out…if only it weren’t a pandemic, you weren’t plagued by your past, you weren’t so scattered. But 'if only' never comes and the things you know you should do, don’t happen. In quiet moments, you wonder if it’ll always be like this. You want to change. You want hope. You want ease. What if I told you that the ease you seek is possible, even when life is challenging?

I am passionate about working with clients who are seeking to improve their sleep , energy, focus and attention and/or who would like to experience less reactivity, racing thoughts, or panic attacks. People who deal with anxiety, high stress levels, PTSD, are recovering from concussion, or children or adults who have ADHD, autism or learning disabilities are the clients I see the most. Following a series of sessions, it is very rewarding to see the frequency, intensity or duration of symptoms subside and clients more able to access and use tools such as mindfulness, meditation or yoga in order to manage day to day stresses.

I work with clients who suffer from various emotional difficulties such as depression, anxiety and trauma. I focus on educating the client what she or he is going through and together we design strategies that help cope with the emotional difficulties. An important emphasis is placed on sleep hygiene because healthy sleep often helps restore emotional well-being. We also offer physical rehabilitation at our clinic for clients who have chronic pain and other physical problems co-existing with emotional difficulties.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
