If you are going through a separation or divorce, you are probably concerned about the effect on your children. This can be a difficult time for them. Children’s emotions may go through stages and change. Your child may feel sad, confused, angry, guilty or worried about what will happen to them. How you handle the changes will be important for your child’s well-being. This is where I can help. I have over 27 years of experience working with children and families with a particular focus at this point in my career, on separation and divorce and the resulting impact on the family unit.

Life happens and sometimes you need a little help learning new strategies for coping with life’s stressors —your child’s behaviour, transitions, new phases in your life, a traumatic event. An outside perspective can work wonders on your mental health and one rooted in evidence-based research provides even better results. I am a bilingual registered psychotherapist and certified counsellor focusing on children,
parenting
, and youth and young adults. I practice in a “positive space” and celebrate diversity. I am committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where you can share and express all aspects of your identities.

My approach is especially helpful for
parenting
; consider reaching out for help; the most difficult of steps can be life changing.
My perspective on mental health help is a coaching relationship where we work together to achieve your goals and arrive at your perspective on your best life. I believe deeply that our first inner voice is that of our caregivers in childhood and that the manner in which we are prepared to enter the world has everything to do with how we will manage stress, health, relationships, adversity and, our own happiness. It is not about blaming, but rather about understanding our perspective; how we came to arrive at making the decisions we have, and then gaining new perspective and skills to take control fully as healthy happy people.

There can be a lot of
parent
guilt to unpack and I hope parents can walk away from their work with me feeling empowered.
I am dedicated to creating a safe, and welcoming space for my clients. I specialize in attachment, emotion regulation, trauma, burnout and family dynamics. I hope to help clients curate self-compassion, deep connections and a greater levels of self-awareness. I also love to assist parents by teaching parents how to “emotion coach” their children. Through emotion coaching, parents are able to connect with their children, and help children learn how to take charge of their big emotions. I help parents know what to say for those moments when nothing seems to work!

Searching for a counsellor and finding the right fit can feel overwhelming - this is why I offer a free 15 minute virtual consultation to give us the opportunity to connect, for you to ask any questions, learn a bit more about me and decide if you feel like I could be a good fit. Parenting Counsellors
What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.
When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.
How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.
Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
