I have a lot of personal and professional experience with LGBTQ+ issues, ADHD,
polyamory
, trauma, and attachment issues.
We live in a world that often doesn't recognize who we are, especially if you are queer, trans, neurodivergent. Whether you are one of those, or all three, I am right there with you. You might be wondering who you are or you might already know. You might have experienced trauma. You might be dealing with organizational challenges, depression, anxiety, grief, relationship issues, and issues with your family of origin. You might be an individual, a monogamous couple, or in a non-monogamous relationship configuration. Wading through all of these issues can be difficult at the best of times, but I am here to help.

I am a social worker who believes in the power of persons and peoples: I work with clients to create opportunities for healing and growth. I have a varied background including crisis intervention, addictions recovery, women's issues, LGBTQ+ concerns, and Parts work. I understand the importance of melding mindfulness techniques with traditional therapeutic approaches. In practice, I work to combine a solid knowledge of the neurobiological underpinnings of trauma while providing a safe and welcoming environment, creatively combining these aspects of care to customise healing journeys in partnership with my clients.

Hello, I'm Thanh (pronounced Tang)! I work with clients who are struggling with their mental health by drawing their strengths and helping them develop greater resiliency. Issues my clients tend to face are stress, anxiety, major transition periods in life, past trauma, grief, mood disorders (such as depression), relationship problems, communication and social skills, and/or low self-esteem. Together, we collaborate to build habits and systems in response to life's challenges, and build a life that clients enjoy living rather than letting the days pass by.

I come to the practice of psychotherapy with over a decade of combined experience as a Social Worker and therapist in community organizations, including extensive experience with a variety of mental health, trauma, and addictions issues. I am particularly passionate about and experienced in working with survivors of sexual assault, childhood sexual abuse, and other relational traumas. My approach to therapy is informed and guided by attachment and feminist theories, and anti-oppressive frameworks.

It's not just you! The world out there can feel like it's on fire... While anxiety, sadness and dread are appropriate responses to what's going on in the world, there are alternatives. We can co- create a narrative of bravery, compassion, joy and...of fun! I work with clients who feel overwhelmed who long to find a sense of purpose and of safety. I work with couples struggling to keep their relationship healthy. I work with emerging adults who are building their identity and trying to cope with it all.

If you're considering seeing a psychologist, you're uncomfortable with something in your life. Maybe you've carried around a vague dissatisfaction with yourself, with others, or with life for as long as you can remember. Maybe you feel empty, hollow, or like some piece of you is missing. Maybe you feel full to bursting with rage, with pain, with despair. Maybe you've noticed that all your relationships tend to end the same way, but you're not sure why. Maybe you keep changing jobs, but never feel accomplished.

Research towards my book "Multidimensional Healing" soon to be published by Austin Macauley revealed that unresolved childhood trauma underlies many common mental, emotional & physical health issues such as PTSD, HDD, anxiety, depression, chronic hypertension & auto-immune diseases. Therefore, I have trained in the trauma resolution methods EMDR, Internal Family Systems & Somatic Experiencing designed to reactivate embodied psychic trauma & facilitate its release. These methods are life-changing when they release the trauma blocking the flow of vitality, love and well-being.

Living in a fast-paced society can often make us feel burned-out, chronically anxious, depressed and alienated from those we love the most. Too often, we are "working for the weekend", and when it comes we have precious little time to spend doing the things that bring us meaning and strengthen our most important relationships. We're typically told that the root of mental health issues comes from inner weakness or lack of resiliency. But, I approach mental health issues as arising primarily from our needs being inadequately met by the community and world around us. So there's a disconnect between how we evolved and where we are now.

Becoming a therapist has been an intentional journey that is the direct result of a desire to collaboratively facilitate healing in myself and others. It is difficult to be in the world right now and the impending fear and anxiety around us can contribute to feelings of overwhelm and a sense of disconnect from ourselves and others. This might have us feeling hopeless, isolated or 'stuck'. Our work together will foster the resilience and self-compassion needed to weather these storms and to recognize and celebrate the wisdom found in the struggle.

Life can be full of stress, with some days being more overwhelming than others. It can be difficult to look inwards and realize that the skills and behaviours we have been using to cope with stress are not as effective as they used to be. Through this inward reflection, you have recognized that something needs to change and I congratulate you on doing so. This recognition can come with uncertainty about how to develop different ways to overcome the challenges that life presents us. Together we will navigate difficulties with negative emotions, disruptive behaviours, or family conflict and work towards making a positive change!

Open Relationships Non-Monogamy Counsellors
Why might an individual want to see a therapist specialising in open relationships and consensual non-monogamy?
A client seeking help with an open or consensually non-monogamous relationship will prefer to talk with a professional whom they can count on to be nonjudgmental. Talking with a supportive therapist may on its own help relieve some of the stigma and challenges partners face. That said, the most important factor in the success of any type of therapy is the ability of the client and practitioner to form a strong, trusting bond. For this reason, an individual or couple could find success with a therapist who does not specialise in non-monogamous relationships but with whom they can build trust.
When should open or consensually non-monogamous partners seek counselling?
Like other couples, polyamorous partners typically seek counseling when they face relationship challenges they can’t solve themselves. In non-monogamous relationships, this could include breaches of trust, including infidelity; unclear rules or violations of boundaries; jealousy of outside partners; the stress of juggling the needs of multiple partners; or the effect of high partner turnover on children. Like those of other couples, polyamorous bonds can be threatened by increasingly frequent arguments, poor or dysfunctional communication, diminished emotional or physical intimacy, or the feeling that something is wrong, even if they don’t know what it is.
Do therapists have special training to gain expertise in open relationships and consensual non-monogamy?
No, but individuals seeking help with non-monogamous relationships would most likely consult a licensed professional with specific training in couples counseling or couples therapy. Couples counselling and couples therapy both involve teaching concrete strategies to navigate conflict in relationships. A good therapist can engage both partners as they explain these approaches but can also work with a single partner.
How long does therapy for consensually non-monogamous couples typically last?
Couples therapy for any type of couple, tends to be relatively time-limited, lasting around 12 weeks on average. A good therapist will tailor sessions to the individual partners’ emotions and sometimes their past, along with patterns found to be repeating in the relationship. In many cases, clients should expect their therapist to assign “homework” between weekly sessions.
