Taking new clients! Are you looking for a therapist that understands the link between trauma and intrusive thoughts and can help treat them both? EMDR can help you re-process traumatic memories so they aren’t disturbing anymore. Trauma therapy can help you learn new ways to understand your feelings and explore how past patterns of behaviour are no longer working in the present. I work with those who have experienced trauma to help them heal and gain a better understanding of how to move forward.

Many of the clients I work with struggle with stress, relationship difficulties, grief, and life transitions. These challenges often leave them feeling stuck, prompting them to seek support to regain a sense of balance, clarity, and resilience in their lives. Common goals of clients I work with include processing and working through unresolved trauma, building self-esteem and reducing self-doubt, and improving communication skills. They want to feel empowered to manage their emotions effectively, communicate more effectively in their relationships, and navigate significant life changes with confidence.

As a therapy-goer myself, I understand how challenging it can be to find the right person to guide you on your healing journey. Before you read any further, take a moment to thank yourself for taking that first step—it’s a big one. As a Somali-Canadian Muslim woman, mother, and child of immigrants, I deeply understand the complexities of navigating intergenerational trauma, such as growing up in a single-parent home, facing poverty, living in social housing, and carrying the weight of self-parenting while reparenting those around you. Your burdens may feel overwhelming, but your past doesn’t have to define your future.

I am so glad you’re here. Maybe life feels overwhelming right now, or maybe you’re navigating anxiety, trauma, ADHD, relationship challenges or all of the above. Maybe you’re not sure where to begin, or you’ve already been doing the work and want to keep going. Wherever you are on your journey, you’re welcome here. When everything starts piling up, gradually or all at once, it’s easy to lose touch with yourself. In all that noise, clarity and connection to your authentic self can feel distant. I understand how exhausting that can be. My goal is to create a safe, collaborative environment where you can explore your concerns.

“Emotion, which is suffering, ceases to be suffering as soon as we form a clear and precise picture of it.” Our lives may be marked by unpredictability, pain, and hardships. Consequently, it is only human to avoid pain. Unfortunately, this avoidance may also have had the unintended consequence of prolonging our suffering. But our challenges do not need to burden us forever. Whatever brought you to seek psychotherapy - you have taken a brave step towards change. I would like to affirm your well-being and growth.

Unmet developmental needs and negative life events can disrupt our instinctive ability to process emotions and regulate our nervous systems. When this happens, we unconsciously adapt and carry on, often at a cost to our long term physical, psychological, and/or spiritual well being. Fortunately, within all of us exists a blueprint for healthy emotional functioning and regulation. In my practice, I support clients who are working to reestablish a connection with their inner self and sometimes even working to build this connection from scratch.

An essential pillar of human equilibrium, mental health can sometimes falter under the weight of hardship. Stress, anxiety, depression, past traumas and relationship issues are all burdens that can weigh heavily on people, disrupting their daily lives and altering their quality of life. Seeking help from a mental health professional can be the key to inner healing. Consulting a mental health professional is by no means a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of inner strength: the ability to recognize one's own limitations and aspire to greater well-being. If you're reading me today, it's because you're looking for a solution.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
