As a South Asian woman and immigrant, I understand feeling the need to be perfect in order to be accepted.
Do you feel that nothing you do is good enough and for you to be truly happy, you need to be achieving greater and greater success in all aspects of life so that you are loved, respected and accepted by others? Have you found yourself saying the phrase “I will be happy when….” before embarking on yet another project, only to find that when you achieve your goals, you are still unhappy and unfulfilled? If you are ready for this to change, I will be honoured to work with you to bring awareness to and move past self-limiting beliefs and help you develop insight and self-acceptance so you can experience a happy and fulfilling life.

Telephone Counselling for Women : I am a cross-cultural feminist therapist, weaving together ancient wisdom such as mindfulness, modern scientific discoveries, & a grassroots feminist approach. We both bring something special to the counselling relationship; you bring wisdom about yourself, I offer expertise on healing. Together we build a compassionate connection, & as a team we focus bringing balance into your life. As a telephone counsellor, I work with women across the globe. Research shows that telephone counselling is as effective as in-person support; it is convenient for women with time constraints, mobility issues, & those with limited access to quality therapy.

As a therapist, I help clients whose moods hijack their lives & negatively impact their relationships, career and body. If you experience overwhelming emotions that stick around too long, have imbalanced thinking, cope poorly with your emotions & stress, have unstable/unhealthy relationships, low self esteem and an unstable sense of self, I can help. As a coach, I work with women bosses who despite all their success have one area of their lives where they feel they have lost their way, lost control, and lost touch with their true selves and their inner knowing.

I have extensive training working with youth and also with women who have experienced violence and experiences of human trafficking.
Welcoming New Clients. Are you feeling overwhelmed and looking for a counselor who has compassion without judgement? I counsel from a strengths-based framework, working with clients to embrace coping strategies to achieve their goals in health and happiness. My approach to psychotherapy is rooted in narrative therapy, family systems and vicarious trauma/compassion fatigue. I believe that people who access counselling are at a place in their lives where they have identified wanting to be in control of their future selves. I'm looking forward to hearing from you so that we can start down that road together.

My education, professional training in healthcare, and experiences as a Black woman in many different geographic locations have shaped my strong understanding of the need for tailored mental health strategies to develop culturally sensitive, anti-oppressive, and trauma-informed care.
Using a client-centred, culturally responsive and anti-oppressive approach, we will find therapeutic strategies that build on your strengths and develop a healthier relationship with what you may see as “weaknesses” as part of a holistic approach to mental health and wellness. This approach in my practice means that I do not limit my clients to the use of one therapeutic technique, but rather that I will work with you to see which method you are comfortable with and which builds on your inherent strengths.

How can I find a therapist in Ottawa?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

How much does therapy cost?

Some forms of mental health treatment (for example, seeing a psychiatrist, or seeing a psychologist in a government-funded hospital) are free under provincial health plans. Canadians who seek private counseling can typically expect to pay an average of $150 per session, although the actual price generally ranges between $100 and $300 per session, depending on their location and the type of provider they select. Workplace benefits or private insurance plans often provide an annual counselling allowance, and some therapists offer sliding scale fees to clients who cannot pay full price.
