I offer counselling that meets people where they are at and I am clinically supervised by a
child
psychologist.
Substance use, trauma and mental health issues can put a significant dent in someone's quality of life. From simply being uncomfortable with how much you are using, or how it is affecting your life, to wishing you could shut your brain or your memories off; to being suicidal or at risk of overdose. You don't need to do this alone. Talking to someone who has seen and helped others with these things can be immensely relieving. If your teenager is going through these problems, it is also relieving to know they are talking to someone about them. Trying to parent a teenager while they are going through this chaos can be challenging.

I provide individual therapy for
children
, adolescents and adults presenting with a wide range of challenges including anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, resiliency, emotion regulation, parenting support as well as other life transitional issues.
My practice is focused on empowering clients to make informed decisions about their own change while providing a compassionate and supportive space. As a person-centered therapist, I seek to enhance one’s quality of life and encourage clients to create their own solutions to situations as they define them; inviting new ways of thinking without imposing one’s own views and to emphasize and allow personal choice and control over one’s own problems while also exploring personal goals and values. I believe humans have the capacity to enhance self-efficacy, confidence, and one’s own belief that they can achieve their goals.

I have both a M.Ed. in Counselling as well as a Master of Social Work, and have been working with kids and families for 20 years. Although I do occasionally take on new adult clients, most of my practice is now geared towards working with
children
. My initial training and area of practice was trauma, and while part of my caseload is always reserved for these clients, my main area of focus these days tends to be
children
with social, emotional and behavioural challenges. I also do a great deal of work with
children
who are struggling to cope with a parent's or sibling's disability or illness.

I have a long history of working with
children
, teenagers and young adults in particular and describe myself as conversational, humorous and creative in my approach.
In 25 years of practice, I have gained much insight and expertise in supporting clients. They often shared the belief they were to blame for their struggles, feeling that this made "sense of the world" (it's gotta be me, right?) This burden impaired their efforts to live a rich and fulfilling life (one with passion, healthy relationships and joy). The goal of eliminating that self-blame is necessary, it frees people to know they are deserving. It also helps to tap into existing strengths and abilities. The best outcome in therapy is when people remember themselves, their values and gain "connection" & the skills for life happiness.

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
